Bruins in Lubbock for NCAA Regional

LUBBOCK, Texas - The 2017 Pac-12 Champion UCLA Bruins, the top seed at the Lubbock NCAA Regional, began play on Monday at The Rawls Course. The three-day tournament runs from Monday through Wednesday at the par-72, 6,593-yard layout.
The scoring fivesome for the Bruins will be junior Erin Choi, sophomores Lilia Vu and Bethany Wu and freshmen Mariel Galdiano and Clare Legaspi. UCLA goes off the first tee on Monday at 9:50 a.m. CT/7:50 a.m. PT in the order of Legaspi, Choi, Wu, Galdiano and Vu. Live scoring will be available here.
The Bruins, who took over the top spot in the latest Golfweek rankings following their sixth conference title, are one of four Pac-12 teams at the 18-team Regional site, as #2-seed and fourth-ranked Arizona State, #12-seed and 42nd-ranked Oregon and #14-seed and 58th-ranked Oregon State also head to the Lone Star State. The other 14 teams heading to Lubbock include #3-seed Furman (#9 Golfweek ranking), #4 Kent State (#16), #5 Texas (#22), #6 Oklahoma (#25), #7 BYU (#39), #8 San Diego State (#30), #9 Texas Tech (#27), #10 TCU (#35), #11 UNLV (#33), #13 Iowa State (#46), #15 Murray State (#77), #16 Georgetown (#117), #17 Richmond (#152) and #18 Sacred Heart (#186).
A total of 72 teams made the NCAA Regionals at four different sites in Lubbock, Texas, Columbus, Ohio, Athens, Georgia and Albuquerque, New Mexico. The top six teams from each Regional (54 holes of stroke play) will advance to the NCAA Championships in Sugar Grove, Ill. (May 19-24).
Vu is coming off a school-record, fourth-straight win at the Pac-12 Championships (April 24-26), winning by six shots with a three-day total of 209 (-7). She is a combined 27-under over her last nine rounds, including 21-under in her middle rounds. Vu has two other Top 10s on the season, 12 rounds under par and eight in the 60s. The sophomore has been named Pac-12 Golfer of the Month for both March and April.
Galdiano, second on the team with a 72.3 scoring average, was second at Pac-12s (-1, 215), her fifth Top 10 of the season. She has finished no worse than T-11 in her last four tournaments, posting a T-3 at the Bruin Wave Invitational (Feb. 27-28) and a fourth-place showing at the Anuenue Spring Break Classic (March 27-29).
Wu posted a pair of under-par rounds to open up the Pac-12s, finishing in a tie for 11th. She also has a T-12 (Anuenue) and a T-13 (Silverado Showdown) in her last three events. She is third in scoring average (73.6), notching seven Top 20s and eight rounds under par.
In four events, Choi has a 73.8 scoring average, tying for sixth at Anuenue, finishing 13th at the Bruin Wave and placing 14th at Pac-12s. She has four rounds under par on the season, including a pair to finish the Anuenue Classic.
Legaspi holds a scoring average of 76.5, recording a pair of Top 10s this season. She was sixth at the Bruin Wave Invitational and eighth at the East Lake Cup, while placing T-39 at the recent Pac-12 Championships.
UCLA has finished either first or second in five straight events, winning the Gifford Great 8 Match Play (March 13-14), the Anuenue and the Pac-12s, while placing second at the Bruin Wave and the Silverado Showdown. The Bruins have four wins on the season, winning in the fall at the Stanford Intercollegiate (Oct. 14-15).
The Bruins have advanced out of the NCAA Regionals a school-record, 16-consecutive times, including eight wins (2014, 2012, 2011, 2009, 2008, 2005, 2004, 2002). It is the third-straight trip to the Lone Star State for the Bruins in Regional competition. UCLA finished third at last year's Bryan Regional and second at the San Antonio Regional in 2015.
