#13 BRUINS HOST LMU, TRAVEL TO LBSU
The 13th-ranked Bruins conclude their non-conference schedule and play in their fourth time zone in as many weeks, hosting Loyola Marymount at the John Wooden Center on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. and traveling to Long Beach State on Friday at 7 p.m. Wednesday's contest will air live on Pac-12 Networks National and Los Angeles, while both matches will have free live audio on UCLABruins.com.
BRUINS IN THE POLLS
The Bruins dropped two spots to 13th in this week's AVCA Coaches Poll, losing 189 points in the standings. Seven teams ranked in the current Top 25 are on the Bruins' schedule (#4 Stanford, #7 Washington, #10 Nebraska, #11 Oregon, #16 Utah, #17 San Diego and #18 USC), while Washington State and Colorado are also receiving votes. In the Pac-12 Conference Preseason Poll, UCLA is fifth, receiving 83 points.
NEWS AND NOTES
Through three weeks of volleyball, sophomore Madeleine Gates ranks 15th in the nation in blocks per set (1.58). Junior Zana Muno is tied for 22nd in digs per set (5.38), while senior Sarah Sponcil is tied for 26th in assists per set (11.25). As a team, the Bruins are tied for 29th with 2.67 bps ... Muno leads all Pac-12 players in dps, Sponcil is tied for second in aps and Gates is fourth in bps. Freshman Mac May is seventh in the league in both kills (3.50) and points (4.17) per set, while junior Kyra Rogers is 10th in hitting percentage (.360). UCLA is second in the conference in dps (15.75) ... seven times this season, a Bruin has served at least two aces in a match. Junior Kyra Rogers and freshman Mac May each have three contests with at least two aces, while sophomore Savvy Simo has one ... senior Reily Buechler surpassed the 1,200-kill mark at Nebraska on Friday and now has 1,211 for her career to move into 23rd in UCLA history. Next up on the list are Jenny Johnson (22nd, 1,212), Brynn Murphy (21st, 1,242) and Jenny Evans (20th, 1,278) ... Sponcil, who also reached the 1,200-kill mark at Nebraska, has surpassed four figures in digs and has 1,027 for her career.
SCOUTING THE LOYOLA MARYMOUNT LIONS
After starting the season 2-3, with all three losses coming to ranked teams (Oregon, Michigan and USC), Loyola Marymount has won three in a row, sweeping Long Beach State and San Diego State last weekend. The Lions are averaging 13.83 kills, 1.62 aces, 13.93 digs and 2.14 blocks per set, hitting .210 as a team. Sophomore Savannah Slattery (3.34) and junior Sara Kovac (3.14) are each averaging over three kills per set, while sophomore Megan Rice is third at 2.58 kps. Sophomores Tess Reid (5.90 assists per set) and Jessie Prichard (5.45) split the setting duties. Senior Kristen Castellanos tops the squad with 4.00 dps, while sophomore Emma Johnson is first with 1.14 bps.ย
THE SERIES: BRUINS VS. LIONS
UCLA leads the all-time series with Loyola Marymount, 11-3, with the Bruins winning at LMU in four sets last Aug. 27. Reily Buechler had 16 kills and 14 digs, while Zana Muno posted 12 digs. This marks the fifth straight season the Bruins and the Lions have squared off, as each team has won twice. In the most recent matchup in Westwood, also at the John Wooden Center, Loyola Marymount won in three, as now Bruin Sarah Sponcil had 11 kills and 10 digs. The teams have split four meetings at UCLA all-time.
SCOUTING THE LONG BEACH STATE 49ERS
Long Beach State, which plays at Pepperdine on Tuesday, has lost seven in a row, falling last weekend to Loyola Marymount, Pacific and San Diego State. The 49ers are averaging 11.25 kills, 1.38 aces, 13.34 digs and 1.98 blocks per set, hitting .172 as a team. Junior Megan Kruidhof is first with 3.72 kps, while sophomore YiZhi Xue is second at 2.06 kps. Senior Alexis Patterson quarterbacks the offense and is posting 8.03 assists per set. Sophomore Hailey Harward is first with 3.97 dps, while Xue has a team-best 0.91 bps.
THE SERIES: BRUINS VS. 49ERS
UCLA has won six straight against Long Beach State and holds a 60-19 advantage all-time. Just like against LMU, the Bruins and the 49ers have squared off in each of the last five seasons. UCLA won a four-setter last Sept. 14 in Long Beach, as Zana Muno had 22 digs and Savvy Simo added 10. The Bruins are 18-6 all-time on the road against LBSU, which last defeated UCLA on Sept. 19, 2009 in Fullerton. UCLA has a three-match winning streak at Long Beach State.
