Bruins Drop First Match of 2017 at Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. -ย Junior Zana Muno had 21 digs, while senior Sarah Sponcil had a double-double with 28 assists and 11 digs, but the 11th-ranked Bruins dropped their first match of the season at #12 Nebraska on Friday night at the Devaney Center. Set scores were 25-15, 25-21, 25-20.

Freshman Mac May had a team-best nine kills with four blocks, freshman Jenny Mosser added eight kills, sophomore Madeleine Gates recorded seven kills, seven blocks and four digs and senior Reily Buechler notched five kills and six digs. The Bruins hit .258 for the match.

The Bruins (5-1) never led in dropping the opening set. Nebraska (4-2) jumped out to an 8-4 lead before UCLA scored four of five, as Buechler and Gates each had kills and teamed up for a block. On a few other occasions, UCLA got to within one, but could not equal the score. At 12-11, a 6-1 Nebraska run made it 18-12, as the home team went on to win the opener, 25-18. Mosser was error-free with four kills in eight attempts (.500 hitting percentage), Buechler added three kills and Muno posted eight digs, as the Bruins were out-hit, .286 to .093.

Trailing 5-3 early in set two, the Bruins scored seven unanswered to go up 10-5. May was a part of four of the seven points on two kills and two combo blocks with Gates and Sponcil. Gates also had a kill, while the Cornhuskers committed two errors. Nebraska closed to within one at 10-9, 11-10 and 12-11, but kills by junior Kyra Rogers and Buechler put UCLA back up by three at 14-11. It was all Nebraska after that though, as the home squad scored 14 of the final 21 points of the second to take it 25-21. May had six kills, Gates tallied three blocks and Muno added nine digs, as the Bruins were out-hit, .205 to .114.

Nebraska though would score the next six and didn't trail for the rest of the set. The Bruins got to within one a few times, but lost the third, 25-20. Gates and Mosser each had three kills, with Gates adding three blocks. Sponcil recorded five digs, while Muno and redshirt junior Taylor Schlener added four each. The Bruins were out-hit, .375 to .270.
