TOP 15 MATCHUP PITS #11 UCLA AT #12 NEBRASKA
The 11th-ranked Bruins, one of 29 undefeated teams heading into this week's play, head to Lincoln for a pair of matches at #12 Nebraska. The teams first meet on Friday at 6 p.m. PT (TV: Big Ten Network) before the rematch on Saturday at 5 p.m. PT (Live video: BTN2Go.com). BRUINS IN THE POLLS
The Bruins remained at 11th in this week's AVCA Coaches Poll for the second week in a row, earning 22 additional points. Seven teams ranked in the current Top 25 are on the Bruins' schedule (#4 Stanford, #8 Washington, #12 Nebraska, #14 Oregon, #15 San Diego, #18 Utah and #19 USC), while Washington State is also receiving votes. In the Pac-12 Conference Preseason Poll, UCLA is fifth, receiving 83 points.
NEWS AND NOTES
Through two weeks of volleyball, the Bruins rank 29th nationally in hitting percentage (.275) and 33rd in blocks per set (2.72). Individually, senior Sarah Sponcil is 12th in assists per set (11.78), sophomore Madeleine Gates is tied for 20th in bps (1.56) and junior Zana Muno is tied for 32nd in digs per set (5.28) ... Muno and Sponcil are second in their respective categories among Pac-12 players ... seven times this season, a Bruin has served at least two aces in a match. Junior Kyra Rogers and freshman Mac May each have three contests with at least two aces, while sophomore Savvy Simo has one ... senior Reily Buechler is one kill away from 1,200 for her career. She has moved up to 23rd in UCLA history with her 1,199 kills. Next up on the list are Jenny Johnson (22nd, 1,212) and Brynn Murphy (21st, 1,242) ... Sponcil is also one kill away from 1,200. She surpassed the 1,000-dig mark last weekend and has 1,008.
SCOUTING THE NEBRASKA CORNHUSKERS
After losing to a couple of nationally-ranked foes during the opening weekend (then-#18 Oregon in four sets on Aug. 25 and then-#12 Florida in five on Aug. 26), Nebraska won all nine of its sets at home last weekend against UMBC, Oral Roberts and Saint Mary's. The Cornhuskers are averaging 13.11 kills, 1.33 aces, 15.78 digs and 2.39 blocks per set, hitting .231 as a team. Four players are averaging at least 2.00 kps, led by junior Mikaela Foecke's 3.33 to go with a team-best eight aces. Freshman Jazz Sweet is second with 2.61 kps, followed by senior Briana Holman (2.28) and redshirt freshman Lauren Stivrins (2.00). Switching to a 6-2 last weekend, redshirt freshman Hunter Atherton (7.44 assists per set) and senior Kelly Hunter (6.11) split the setting duties. Junior Kenzie Maloney leads the team with 4.56 dps, while Holman is tops with 1.39 bps.ย
THE SERIES: BRUINS VS. CORNHUSKERS
Nebraska leads the all-time series with UCLA, 10-4, and won the last matchup in Lincoln in five sets on Aug. 25, 2012. The Bruins are 3-4 at Nebraska, including a five-set triumph on Sept. 13, 2009
