STANFORD, Calif. - The second-ranked Bruins, two-time defending champions of the Stanford Intercollegiate, return to the Stanford Golf Course this weekend. The 54-hole tournament runs from Friday through Sunday at the par-71, 6,130-yard layout.
The starting fivesome for UCLA will consist of senior Beth Wu, juniors Mariel Galdiano and Clare Legaspi, sophomore Vera Markevich and freshman Phoebe Yue. Senior Lilia Vu and sophomore Patty Tavatanakit will not be playing at the Stanford Intercollegiate as they prepare for the LPGA Q-Series (Oct. 24-27 and Oct. 31-Nov. 3) in North Carolina.
Joining the Bruins and host and No. 26 Stanford in the 17-team field are No. 3 USC, No. 8 Arizona State, No. 12 Washington, No. 18 Northwestern, No. 21 Pepperdine, No. 25 Florida State, No. 27 San Jose State, No. 39 Oregon, No. 46 Iowa State, California, Denver, Harvard, Oklahoma State, San Diego State and Washington State (Golfstat rankings as of Oct. 16).
The Bruins are coming off a victory at the Golfweek Conference Challenge (Sept. 24-26), winning by 33 shots. UCLA set a new 54-hole school record for the second tournament in a row, posting a total of 32-under 832. The Bruins' last round at the Golfweek Challenge, a 17-under 271, also set a new school record for the best single round in relation to par. UCLA has been under par in all six rounds, including all three at the season-opening ANNIKA Intercollegiate (Sept. 17-19), where it placed second (-26, 838).
Galdiano is coming off her first collegiate victory, winning the Golfweek Conference Challenge by two shots over Tavatanakit. The junior finished at 13-under 203, firing a career-low, 7-under 65 in the final round. She has been under par in five of her six rounds, including a 4-under 68 at the GCC. Galdiano opened with a T-18 finish at the ANNIKA (-2, 214), shooting a 3-under 69 in round two.
Legaspi tied for seventh at the Golfweek Challenge (-3, 213), recording a 4-under 68 in round one. She also finished T-45 at the ANNIKA (+6, 222). Wu tied for 15th at the ANNIKA (-3, 213), shooting a 2-under 70 and a 1-under 71 in the final two rounds. She was under par in her first round (-1, 71) at the GCC, where she tied for 40th. Markevich is making her first appearance in the Bruin starting five after playing in three tournaments as an individual last season, with her best finish being a T-60 at the Bruin Wave Invitational. Yue will be making her first collegiate start. She won the 2018 BC Junior Girls' Championship and the 15-18 Girls' title at the MJT Humber College PGM Classic.

In 2016, UCLA won the rain-shortened, 36-hole event by 11 shots (-4, 572). The Bruins have won the tournament five times, also winning in 1995, 2008 and 2011. With Tavatanakit's victory last season, Bruins have won five consecutive Stanford Intercollegiates (Bronte Law, 2014-2016; Alison Lee, 2013).
