Bruins Record Three B Cuts on Day Two of Georgia Invite

November 30, 2018 | Swimming & Diving

ATHENS, Ga. โ€“ The UCLA swim & dive team remained in fifth place after the second day of competition at the Georgia Fall Invitational, hosted by the University of Georgia at the Gabrielsen Natatorium.

After recording four B Cuts and having one diver qualify for NCAA Zone Championships on Thursday, the Bruins followed up with three more B cuts on Friday. UCLA has accrued 281.5 points over the first two days of competition. Michigan remained in the lead after the conclusion of day two.

UCLA's most successful event on Friday was the 100 breaststroke.

Freshman Claire Grover swam a 1:00.77 in the prelim, fourth-best among all competitors, to secure a spot in the A-Final. There, she finished in 1:01.08 for an eight-place overall finish, UCLA's best individual placing of the day. Her prelim time was good for an NCAA B-Standard, giving her two B Cuts in two days at the Georgia Fall Invitational.

Kenisha Liu bounced back from a 1:02.26 in the prelims to record a B cut at 1:01.53 in the finals, finishing first in the "C" Final and 17th overall. Emily Lo was right behind her with a season-best time of 1:01.99 for 18th overall.

The Bruins got their third and final B cut of the day in the 400 IM, as Delaney Smith recorded a 4:16.85 to win the "B" Final and finish ninth overall. Though she missed out on a B Cut, Ella Kirschke was the second-place finisher in the "B" Final and 10th overall. Her time was a season-best.

UCLA opened its day with a sixth-place result in the 200 medley relay, as the Bruins' A Team of Emma Schanz, Claire Grover, Amy Okada, and Kenisha Liu came in at 1:39.23.

Okada was the Bruins' top finisher in the 100 fly, touching in 54.02 to take 13th place. She swam a season-best 53.77 in the prelims, missing the NCAA B-Standard of 53.76 by one-hundredth of a second.

Sandra Soe was the lone Bruin to compete in the finals of the 200 free, where she placed 20th at 1:49.34. Her prelim time, 1:49.02, was the best by a Bruin this year.

Emma Schanz (54.05) and Mara Newman (54.47) finished 1-3 in the "C" Final of the 100 back, placing 17th and 19th overall, respectively. Jennifer Lathrop was not far behind at 55.08, good for 23rd place. All three times were individual season-bests.

UCLA closed its day by swimming in the 800 freestyle relay for the first time this year. The Bruins' A Team of Okada, Newman, Kaunitz, and Howard completed the relay in 7:15.57 to take sixth place overall. The B Team of Smith, Soe, Kirschke, and Liu touched in 7:28.76, taking eighth place.

Sophomore Alice Yanovsky accumulated a score of 243.55 in the 1-meter diving championship to take 10th place, her second top-10 finish in as many days (she was seventh in 3m on Thursday). Senior Traci Shiver was just behind her in 11th with a score of 239.65, while senior Madeline Russell had a final tally of 206.25, good for 14th.

UCLA wraps up competition at the Georgia Fall Invitational on Saturday. The scheduled events include 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, 1650 free, and platform diving.
