Top-Ranked Bruins in Familiar Spot in Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. - Following 36 holes of golf on Monday, the top-ranked Bruins and junior Lilia Vu both stand in the same place they did at the Sewailo Golf Club after the 2017 Pac-12 Championships, as UCLA and the top-ranked collegiate golfer are in first place after two rounds at the Wildcat Invitational.
The Bruins led Long Beach State and Texas by four shots following an opening-round, 10-under 278, and then grew their lead to 10 shots following a second-round, 4-under 294. UCLA is at 14-under 562 after two rounds, leading Arizona by 10 strokes.
Vu was up by four strokes after 18 holes after an 8-under 64, one shy of her career low, which is also the UCLA record. She was bogey free, making birdie on her first hole, the eighth, while also gaining strokes on #10, #13, #15, #17, #2, #5 and #7. In round two, Vu maintained her lead with a 3-under 69, putting her five up on the field. Vu holed out for an eagle on the first hole, adding birdies on #8, #15, #16, #17 and #5 to go with two bogeys and a double to put her at 11-under 133 after 36 holes. She is in search of her fourth victory in a row and eighth career tournament win, which would establish a new UCLA record.
Sophomore Mariel Galdiano was tied for sixth after round one, shooting a 3-under 69. She birdied her first hole, #9, as well as #12, #14, #17, #3, #5 and #7, adding one bogey and one triple. The sophomore is five back of Vu after two rounds following a second-straight 69. Galdiano birdied her first hole again, #9, as well as the last three of the back nine (#16-#18), gaining another stroke on #3. She also had two bogeys and is at 6-under 138 after two rounds.
Senior Erin Choi, beginning on #10, recorded a 2-over 74 and was tied for 47th after 18 holes. From holes #12 through #17, she made a pair of birdies on #13 and #16 to go with four bogeys, while making par on her remaining 12 holes. Choi continued her steady play in the afternoon, making three birdies on #12, #14 and #5 and two bogeys for a 1-under 71, as she is tied for 20th at 1-over 145 after 36 holes.
Junior Beth Wu was tied for 17th following an opening-round 71 (-1). Starting on the 10th, she made three birdies in her first four holes, as well as an eagle on the eighth, adding two bogeys and a double. In round two, Wu shot a 3-over 75 on a birdie (#5) and four bogeys, as she is tied for 27th (+2, 146) after two rounds. Freshman Vera Markevich, playing as an individual, totaled an 84 (+12) in her first round, making a birdie on the third, five bogeys and four doubles. She was nine shots better in the afternoon with a 3-over 75, making a birdie on #14 and four bogeys, as she is tied for 84th (+15, 159). Sophomore Clare Legaspi shot an opening-round 80 (+8, 84th), making birdies on #5 and #8, seven bogeys and a triple. She posted a 9-over 81 in round two on two birdies (#5 and #8), six bogeys, one double and a triple, as she is in 90th (+17, 161).
Tuesday's final round will be another shotgun start, beginning at 7 a.m. PT, with Galdiano and Vu starting on #1, Choi on #2, Wu on the third and Legaspi on #4. Markevich will open on #18. Live scoring will be available here.
