TUCSON, Ariz. -ย Redshirt sophomore Rachel Garcia tossed three shutout innings of relief, striking out six, while adding three hits at the plate, with redshirt freshman Aaliyah Jordan also posting a three-hit contest, as the fourth-ranked Bruins claimed another series win with a 7-3 victory on Saturday night at #11 Arizona.
The Bruins improved to 36-3 overall and 11-3 in Pac-12 play, while the Wildcats fell to 27-11 and 6-8 in league action.
Garcia moved to 12-1 on the season, recording a pair of strikeouts in each of her three innings and limiting Arizona to one hit. Freshman Holly Azevedo started and finished the game, throwing four innings and striking out four, giving up one earned run (three total), five hits and one walk. She had a 1-2-3 inning in the first and two strikeouts in the second. UCLA had 11 hits as a team from seven different players.ย
Arizona scored first in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by Alyssa Palomino, but the Bruins took the lead on one swing in the fourth. Jordan led off with a double to left-center, and one out later, sophomore Bubba Nickles homered to left, her sixth of the season, to put UCLA up.
The Wildcats tied things up in their half of the fourth, as Malia Martinez scored on an error, but again, the Bruins answered with two runs in their next at-bat. Freshman Kinsley Washington reached on an error to open the fifth, moved to second on a grounder by freshman Briana Perez and scored on a single to left by senior Kylee Perez to give UCLA a 3-2 edge. Following a single by Jordan to left to move Kylee to third, Garcia singled through the 5-6 hole to plate the senior to make it 4-2.
UCLA tacked on two more in the sixth on one swing. With one out, junior Brianna Tautalafua reached on an infield single and scored on junior Paige Halstead's first home run of the season off the batter's eye in center to put the Bruins ahead 6-2.
In the seventh, a Jordan leadoff single, a Garcia double and a sacrifice fly by senior Madeline Jelenicki made it 7-2. Arizona got a run in the seventh when Jenna Kean scored on an error following a leadoff triple, but Azevedoย got the next three outs to wrap up the four-run win.
UCLA looks for the series sweep on Sunday at 5 p.m. The game will air on Pac-12 Networks.
