SEATTLE - The top-ranked and defending Pac-12 champion Bruins were the only team under par on Sunday at the Broadmoor Golf Club, as UCLA shot a 1-under 287 to hold a three-stroke lead after 18 holes at the Pac-12 Conference Championships. The Bruins lead second-place Stanford (+2, 290) and are four up on Arizona State, Colorado and USC (+3, 291).
Junior Lilia Vu, last year's medalist at Pac-12s, is in a three-way tie for first with Stanford's Ziyi Wang and Washington's Sarah Rhee, as the trio each shot 4-under 68s. Vu had a birdie on her first hole and eight pars to complete the front nine before losing a shot on the 10th. She would rebound with birdies on four of her last seven holes (#12, #13, #15 and #18) to earn a share of the lead.
Freshman Patty Tavatanakit is tied for fourth and one shot back of the threesome at 4-under following a 69 (-3). Tavatanakit also birdied the opening par-5, adding birdies on #7 and #9 to go with a bogey on the second. After three consecutive bogeys to open her second nine, the freshman bounced back with four birdies in a row (#13-#16), going bogey (#17)-birdie (#18) on her last two holes to finish at 3-under.
Junior Beth Wu is tied for 14th, posting a 1-over 73. She birdied three of her first six holes (#1, #4 and #6), and following four bogeys in a row (#8-#11), she made back-to-back birdies on #12 and #13 to get back to red figures. In Wu's next three holes, she went birdie (#16), bogey (#15) and double (#14), ending with two pars. Sophomore Clare Legaspi is tied for 37th (+5, 77), recording a pair of birdies on #7 and #13, five bogeys and a double. Sophomore Mariel Galdiano is in 51st (+8, 80), posting a birdie on #1, three bogeys and three doubles.
The Bruins will begin their second round on Monday at 10:50 a.m. off tee #1 in the order of Galdiano, Legaspi, Wu, Tavatanakit and Vu. Live scoring will be available here.
