Top-Ranked Bruins Sweep Saturday Doubleheader

LOS ANGELES - Redshirt sophomore Rachel Garcia struck out a career-high 18 in a one-hit shutout of #21 Oklahoma State in Saturday's nightcap, while sophomore Bubba Nickles went 4-for-5 with three RBI in the doubleheader sweep, which started with a 4-1 victory over South Dakota State for the top-ranked Bruins at Easton Stadium.

In game one versus the Coyotes (15-36), freshman Holly Azevedo struck out seven in seven innings to move to 14-0, allowing just one run, three hits and two walks. She struck out a pair in the first, fifth and seventh and had 1-2-3 frames in the second, fifth and seventh. At the plate, the Bruins had seven hits from five different players, as freshman Kinsley Washington joined Nickles with a two-hit contest.

The Bruins (43-3) scored four times in the third. Junior Taylor Pack led off with a walk, Washington singled to center and senior Kylee Perez singled back to the pitcher to load the bases for freshman Briana Perez, who singled to left to bring in Pack with the game's first run. Redshirt freshman Aaliyah Jordan followed with a single to left to bring in Washington to make it 2-0. One out later, junior Brianna Tautalafua walked to force home Kylee Perez, while a sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Nickles brought in Briana Perez to up the lead to 4-0.

South Dakota got on the board in the fourth on a solo homer by Jessica Rogers, but it would be the only run for the Coyotes.

In game two against the Cowgirls (36-16), Garcia (16-1) was in command in the circle, allowing only one hit, a leadoff double by Vanessa Shippy in the fourth. She also gave up two walks in seven innings. She had 1-2-3 innings in the second, third, fifth and seventh, struck out the side in the third, fourth, fifth and seventh and two each in the first, second and sixth. At the plate, the Bruins had seven hits from six different players, as Nickles added another two-hit contest.

The Bruins posted two runs in the first, as Briana Perez reached on a one-out infield single and moved to second on a single to center by Jordan, with both runners moving up on a wild pitch. Following a Tautalafua walk to load the bases, Nickles singled to left to bring in a pair of runs.

UCLA added four in the second, as senior Madeline Jelenicki opened up the inning with a homer to left, her third of the season. Junior Paige Halstead walked, moved to second on an infield single by Washington and scored on a single up the middle by Kylee Perez to make it 4-0. After Briana Perez reached on an error to load the bases, a wild pitch allowed Washington to score to extend the lead to 5-0. A Jordan walk re-loKylee Perezses, with Garcia connecting on a sacrifice fly to left to score Kylee Perez to make it 6-0.

In the fifth, the Bruins added another run. Garcia drew a leadoff walk and was pinch-run for by junior Zoe Shaw, who moved to second on a one-out single by Nickles, to third on a wild pitch and home on another wild pitch.

Oklahoma State had a great chance in the fourth after having runners at third and second with no outs, but Garcia struck out the next three batters. Two innings later, Garcia walked the first two, but got the next three, including two by strikeout.

The Bruins are back in action on Tuesday, May 1 at Cal State Fullerton at 6 p.m.
