11TH-RANKED BRUINS STAY HOME, HOST GONZAGA
With an impending hurricane scheduled to hit the Hawaiian Islands this weekend, the 11th-ranked Bruins' trip to Hawai'i has been canceled. Instead, UCLA will host a two-match homestand with Gonzaga this weekend. The Bruins and the Bulldogs will play at the John Wooden Center (Collins Court) on Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. Admission to the matches is free.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bruins will travel south to tangle with a pair of ranked opponents at the USD Invitational, facing No. 16 Baylor on Friday, Aug. 31 at 1 p.m. and No. 14 San Diego on Sunday, Sept. 2 at 5 p.m.
BRUINS IN THE POLLS
The Bruins were ranked 11th in the AVCA Preseason Top 25 Coaches Poll, earning 850 points. UCLA is one of seven Pac-12 teams ranked in the Top 25 (No. 1 Stanford, No. 10 USC, No. 15 Colorado, No. 17 Washington, No. 18 Oregon and No. 19 Utah), with Washington State and Oregon State also receiving votes. In addition, No. 14 San Diego, No. 16 Baylor and No. 24 Cal Poly are also on the Bruins' schedule.
GATES, MAY NAMED PRESEASON ALL-PAC-12
Junior Madeleine Gates and sophomore Mac May were named to the Preseason All-Pac-12 Conference Team on Aug. 15, while the Bruins were ranked fourth in the Pac-12 Preseason Coaches Poll.
UCLA received 90 points in the poll, trailing only Stanford (121 points - 11 first-place votes), USC (100 points - one first-place vote) and Oregon (96).
SCOUTING THE GONZAGA BULLDOGS
Gonzaga returns 12 letterwinners and six starters from last year's team which went 14-16 and tied for fourth in the West Coast Conference with a 9-9 record. Last season, the Bulldogs hit .187 as a team, averaging 11.90 kills, 1.01 aces, 14.05 digs and 1.95 blocks per set. Three of four players who averaged over two kills per set last season are back, led by sophomore Sarah Penner (2.61). Redshirt senior Kaylie Loewen was second at 2.32 kps, while sophomore Chapin Gray was third (2.15). Senior Faith Smith (5.84 assists per set) and junior Jenna Kuehn (3.95) are both back after splitting the setting duties in 2017. The leader in digs, senior Tiyana Hallums (3.36 dps), is also back. The Bruins and the Bulldogs have met just once before, with UCLA sweeping Gonzaga in the first round of the 1990 NCAA Tournament at the John Wooden Center.
