LAKE ELMO, Minn. - The top-ranked Bruins tied for the best round of the day on Tuesday at the Royal Golf Club, producing a 13-under 275 in the second round of the ANNIKA Intercollegiate presented by 3M. After 36 holes, UCLA is third at 16-under 560 as a team, just three shots back of first-place Duke (-19, 557).
Three Bruins are inside the Top 10 after two rounds, led by senior Lilia Vu, who is in solo eighth at 6-under 138. Vu had to finish the last two holes of her first round early Tuesday morning and closed with a flourish, going eagle-birdie on the 17th and 18th, both par 5s. Then in round two, she rebounded from another slow start (two bogeys in her first three holes) with six birdies and no bogeys in her final 14 holes. Vu gained strokes on No. 5, 11, 12, 14, 17 and 18 to complete a 4-under 68.
Sophomore Patty Tavatanakit, who parred her final two holes to complete her first round, was bogey-free in round two, posting a 4-under 68. After eight pars, she made a birdie on the ninth, which was followed by three more pars and a birdie on the 13th. The sophomore added four more pars before making an eagle on the par-5 18th. Tavatanakit is at 4-under 140 and in a tie for ninth after 36 holes.
Junior Mariel Galdiano is also at 4-under 140 through two rounds, recording a 3-under 69 on Tuesday. She had four birdies in a five-hole stretch (No. 3-4 and No. 6-7), adding another on the 15th to go with two bogeys. Senior Beth Wu posted a 2-under 70 and is tied for 16th (-2, 142). She made four birdies on No. 5, 12, 15 and 18 and two bogeys. Junior Clare Legaspi is tied for 45th (+5, 149), shooting a 1-over 73 on Tuesday, which included an eagle-2 on the par-4 15th and a birdie on the par-5 18th, adding four bogeys.
The final round for the Bruins starts at 7:50 a.m. PT/9:50 a.m. CT on Wednesday in the order of Legaspi, Wu, Galdiano, Tavatanakit and Vu.
