No. 17 Bruins Fall in Three at No. 14 USC

LOS ANGELES - Junior Savvy Simoย had 13 digs for the 17th-rankedย Bruins, while senior Zana Muno added 12 in Wednesday's three-set loss at No. 14 USC. Set scores were 21-25, 8-25, 27-29.
Junior Madeleine Gates and sophomore Mac May paced the Bruins' offense with eight kills apiece, as May also had six digs and two aces. Senior Kyra Rogers had six kills and four blocks and freshman Hawley Harrerย recorded five kills. The Bruins hit .142 for the match.
The Bruins (5-3, 0-1 Pac-12) trailed throughout most of the opening set. Trailing 12-8, UCLA scored six of seven to take a 14-13 advantage. Harrer and sophomore Jenny Mosser each had two kills during the run, Rogers added a kill and USC (9-3, 1-0 Pac-12) made an error. The one-point margin was the first and only lead for the Bruins in set one. Even at 16, USC scored nine of the next 14 to take the opener by a score of 25-21. Harrer had four kills in the first set, while Mosser and Rogers each added three. Freshman Devon Chang had five digs, Simo recorded four and Rogers added three blocks, as the Bruins were out-hit .171 to .089. USC also won set two, 25-8. Simoย and junior Kylie Miller had four digs. The Bruins were out-hit .441 to .032.
UCLA scored four of the first five points in set three on two Muno kills, a Rogers ace and a solo block byย Mosser. The Trojans responded with a 13-5 run to take a set-best lead of five at 14-9. The Bruins slowly made their way back in the set, and trailing 18-14, went on an 8-2 run to take a 22-20 lead. Gates had three kills during the run, May added two, Rogers posted a kill and a block with Miller and USC made an error. The Trojans responded with four of five to earn a match point, but a May kill saved it. Following a USC sideout, a Trojan attack error kept the Bruins in it at 25-all, which was followed by a Gates/Muno block to earn UCLA a set point. USC came back with the next two, but a Gates kill saved a third match point. However, the Trojans recorded the next two to win the third, 29-27. Gates had six kills in the third, May added five and Rogers posted three. Munoย also had nine digs, with Simo adding five. The Bruins out-hit the Trojans .273 to .250.
The Bruins continue Pac-12 play on Friday at No. 23 Utah at 6 p.m. PT. The match will air live on Pac-12 Networks National and Los Angeles.
