Bruins, Galdiano Win Golfweek Conference Challenge

WOLCOTT, Colo. - For the second tournament in a row, the top-ranked Bruins set a new 54-hole school record, winning the Golfweek Conference Challenge by 33 shots, as junior Mariel Galdiano posted the first victory of her collegiate career.
UCLA, which produced a 54-hole, school-record total of 26-under 838 at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate last week, set a new Bruin mark at the Red Sky Golf Club, finishing with a score of 32-under 832. The Bruins on Wednesday also set a new school record for best single round in relation to par at 17-under (271).
Galdiano shot her best collegiate round in posting a 7-under 65 to finish at 13-under 203. She fired a front-nine, 7-under 29, making an eagle-2 on the par-4 sixth to go with five birdies on No. 1, 2, 5, 8 and 9. Galdiano balanced her books on the back nine, making two birdies (No. 13 and 15) and two bogeys to win by two strokes over teammate Patty Tavatanakit.
Tavatanakit, coming off a win at the ANNIKA, shot a 5-under 67 in her final round to place solo second at 11-under 205. She made three birdies (No. 2, 5 and 8), a bogey and a double on her front nine before catching fire on the back, going 6-under in a five-hole stretch. The sophomore made four birdies in a row from holes No. 11 through 14 before making an eagle-3 on the par-5 15th to get to within a shot of Galdiano. Tavatanakit made one bogey coming in to finish two back.
Senior Lilia Vu charged into the Top 10, recording a 5-under 67 to tie for fifth at 4-under 212. She made six birdies on No. 2, 5, 6, 12, 16 and 17, adding one bogey. Junior Clare Legaspi tied for seventh at 3-under 213, shooting an even-par 72 on Wednesday. She posted a pair of birdies on No. 2 and 18 and two bogeys. Senior Beth Wu tied for 40th (+11, 227), shooting a 5-over 77 on one birdie (No. 7), two bogeys and two doubles.
Next up for the Bruins is the Stanford Intercollegiate, which will take place Oct. 19-21 at the Stanford Golf Course.
