BOULDER, Colo. - Junior Mac May led all players with 18 kills and committed just one hitting error in 33 attempts for a .515 hitting percentage, adding seven digs, as the Bruins swept Colorado on Sunday at the CU Events Center. Set scores were 25-15, 25-23, 25-18.
Senior Cali Thompson recorded a double-double with 24 assists and 11 digs, as the Bruins (9-6, 4-2 Pac-12) hit .347 as a team. Senior Savvy Simo had nine kills and four digs, sophomore Kelli Barry tallied nine digs and junior Jenny Mosser posted five kills and five blocks.
The Bruins trailed 6-5 early in set one before reeling off 20 of the next 29 points to win the opener by 10. As part of a 6-1 run, May had two kills, redshirt freshman Lexi Hadrych added one and Colorado made three errors to put UCLA up by four at 11-7. The Bruins led by at least three for the rest of the set. At 13-10, another 6-1 Bruin run on a Mosser kill, ace and block, a Barry ace, a kill by redshirt sophomore Sabrina Smith and a CU error made it 19-11. A service error by the Buffaloes on the Bruins' second set point closed out a 25-15 win. May was 4-for-6 with no errors in the opening set and Ryan added three kills, as the Bruins hit .346 and held Colorado to a -.043 percentage.
Colorado (8-8, 0-6 Pac-12) was up 6-3 in set two before UCLA scored five in a row and nine of 10 to take a five-point lead. Two Simo kills, one from Mosser, a Barry ace and a Mosser/Smith block put UCLA up 8-6, and after a CU sideout, two Simo kills, one by Thompson and a Simo/Smith roof made it 12-7. Five would be the Bruins' largest lead in the set, but Colorado made a comeback to re-take the lead at 21-20. However, UCLA scored five of the next seven, as a May kill, a block by Ryan and a CU attack error put the Bruins ahead 23-21, with a May kill closing out a 25-23 win. May had six kills and five digs, Simo was 5-for-10 with no errors, Mosser added three kills and Barry posted four digs. The Bruins out-hit the Buffaloes, .359 to .140.
The Bruins only trailed by one at 3-2 and 4-3, as a 4-1 run on kills by Thompson and May, a Smith ace and a CU attack error put UCLA ahead 7-5. The Buffaloes would tie it again at seven, but the Bruins responded with a 5-1 run on two May kills, aces by Thompson and May and a Colorado attack error to go ahead 12-8. As Colorado closed the gap to one at 18-17, the Bruins ended the match with a 7-1 run. May sparked the run with back-to-back kills, which was followed by a CU attack error, a Mosser kill and block with redshirt freshman Tristin Savage and another Buffalo attack error to earn seven match points. On the second try, a Savage kill closed out the 25-18 win. May was 8-for-14 in the third set with no errors, as the Bruins out-hit the Buffaloes, .333 to .188. Thompson added six digs and Barry had four.
The Bruins are back on the road again next weekend, starting with a matchup at Oregon on Friday, Oct. 18 at 6 p.m. The contest will air on Pac-12 Network.
