WEEK IN REVIEW
The Bruins went 0-1-1 last week against the Bay Area Pac-12 teams, getting edged 1-0 by No. 7 Stanford on Thursday before drawing with Cal 3-3 on Sunday. UCLA outshot the Cardinal 8-5 on Thursday, becoming one of just three teams this year to accomplish that feat, and had the majority of possession but the contest was ultimately decided by an 81st minute marker by Charlie Wehan. The Bruins and Golden Bears produced an epic back-and-forth battle on Sunday that resulted in a 3-3 tie. The Bruins led on two separate occasions in the first half, but Cal equalized both times. The Golden Bears took their only lead of the game with a 69th minute goal, but the Bruins responded with a goal by Alexis Triadis in the 83rd to complete the scoreline. Both Triadis and senior midfielder/defender Matt Powell scored their first goals of 2019 in the tie.
EARLY STARTERS
Early goals have been a common occurence in UCLA games so far this season. A goal has been scored by either UCLA or the opponent within the opening 10 minutes in seven of UCLA's 12 games this year (58%). The Bruins are 3-3-1 in those contests.
TOUGH ROAD
Entering the week, UCLA boasts the second-toughest schedule of any team in the country. The Bruins' scheduled 2019 opponents have combined for a .651 winning percentage, trailing only Syracuse (.665) nationwide. UCLA's past opponents have posted a .637 winning percentage, while the Bruins' remaning opponents hold a combined .680 winning percentage.
BRUINS HELPING BRUINS
UCLA has scored 22 goals so far this season (43rd nationwide), accruing 26 assists along the way. The Bruins' 1.18 assists per goal is tied for fifth-best in the nation (Michigan leads the NCAA at 1.57). UCLA has recorded at least one assist on 19 of 22 team goals, including seven tallies with two assists.
ILOSKI MAKES HISTORY AGAINST SDSU
Milan Iloski made school history on Oct. 6 in a contest against San Diego State, scoring a program-record five goals in a 5-2 win for UCLA.
The Bruins have been traditionally tough to beat on their home field. Dating back to 2010, UCLA is 66-25-10 (.703) in home games, and has recorded a winning record at home in every season. UCLA is 9-6-2 (.588) at home since moving to Wallis Annenberg Stadium before the 2018 season.
ILOSKI TAKES OVER NATIONAL SCORING LEAD
Thanks to a five-game scoring streak out of the gate and a five-goal performance against SDSU, UCLA junior forward Milan Iloski has now taken over the national lead in a number of categories.
UCLA and San Diego played each other on Aug. 28, 2018 in the first-ever regular season game at Wallis Annenberg Stadium, with the Bruins posting a 2-0 clean sheet. Mohammed Kamara scored a pair of goals just before the halftime whistle, and the Bruin defense did the rest as USD didn't get a shot on frame until the final 10 minutes of the match. UCLA outshot USD 9-4 overall.
THE SERIES AGAINST SAN DIEGO
The Bruins and Toreros have been frequent competitors in the past, as the two programs have squared off nearly every year since 1997 (2015-16 being the sole exceptions). UCLA is 24-8-4 all-time against San Diego. The two have met eight times in the postseason with equal 4-4 records. The Bruins have faced only other program (San Francisco - 10) more in postseason program history. UCLA has never lost at home to USD in regular season program history, posting a 15-0-1 record dating back to 1980 (home-away designations unavailable prior to that year).
FERCH ON FIRE
Sophomore midfielder Riley Ferch has come into his own in the last few weeks, posting five assists and seven points over his last four games. That stretch includes multi-assist performances against SDSU and Cal and a three-point game against UC Riverside featuring his first NCAA goal. Overall on the year, he has one goal, seven assists, and nine points. His seven helpers pace the Pac-12, rank 10th nationally, and match UCLA's team leader in 2018 (Matt Hundley).
RED-HOT OCTOBER
The Bruins have stepped up their offensive production since the calendar turned to October, potting 11 goals in four games. That stretch features three games with three or more goals including a season-high five scores against San Diego State. UCLA's 2.75 goals per game for the month of October is double their production from the first eight games of the season (1.38) and would be ranked fifth nationally if extrapolated over the whole season. For October, no other Pac-12 team has more goals or a better GPG rate than the Bruins (Cal is second in both at nine and 2.25).
ILOSKI TO ILOSKI
Junior midfielder Eric Iloski has earned the primary assist on three of his brother's goals this year - his opening goals against Maryland and CSUN as well as his third goal against SDSU. The brothers have now recorded a point on the same goal on four occasions - Milan and elder brother Brian assisted on an Eric goal against San Diego State on Oct. 15, 2017.
SETTING IT UP
Entering the week, the Bruins have four players with three or more assists on the year. Riley Ferch has a team-high seven, while Matt Powell and Cody Sundquist each have a career-high four. Eric Iloski has three. Stanford is the only other Pac-12 program that has four players with 3+ assists. Overall, UCLA ranks first in the league and 16th nationwide with 26 assists.
UCLA100
UCLA will celebrate its first 100 years with a year-long university-wide Centennial Celebration. UCLA Athletics has several Centennial Celebration plans and giveaways in store for designated home events, including a set of 13 Centennial Pins highlighting each sport, as well as a souvenir mosaic poster that features personal photos submitted by UCLA fans. Men's soccer held its Centennial game on Sept. 26 against UC Irvine.
