Bruins Chop Down Cardinal, 34-16

STANFORD, Calif. – UCLA built a 21-10 lead at halftime and never looked back, snapping an 11-game losing streak to Stanford on Thursday night on ESPN with a 34-16 victory at Stanford Stadium. With the win, the Bruins improved to 46-42-3 all-time against the Cardinal, posting their first win at Stanford since a 45-17 victory on Sept. 1, 2007.
The Bruins were dominant on both sides of the ball, outgaining the Cardinal 455-198 total yards.
UCLA quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson made a triumphant return after missing the Oregon State game and completed 21 of 34 passes for 192 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. He also had 13 carries for 66 yards and one touchdown.
Joshua Kelley rushed for a season-high 176 yards (on 18 carries) with one touchdown, including a 75 yards in the fourth quarter alone. Kelley also hauled in two catches for 13 yards.
Kyle Philips had career-highs in receptions (10), receiving yards (100), and receiving touchdowns (two). The last Bruin to make at least 10 catches in a game was Caleb Wilson (11) last season at Arizona State (Nov. 10, 2018). Philips became the third Bruin this season with a 100-yard receiving game, joining Demetric Felton (150 vs. Washington State, Sept. 21) and Chase Cota (147 vs. Washington State).
Stanford quarterback Jack West threw for 143 yards, connecting on 15 of 32 passes. He was sacked seven times and rushed 11 times for 12 yards.
The Cardinal (3-4, 2-3 in the Pac-12) scored on the first possession of the game on a 42-yard field goal by Jet Toner. That was Stanford's last offensive points until the end of the fourth quarter.
UCLA (2-5, 2-2) responded immediately to the Cardinal's score with a 9-play, 69-yard drive, culminating in a 19-yard touchdown pass from Thompson-Robinson to Philips to lead 7-3 with 8:16 left in the first period. The Bruins would never trail again. After a defensive stop, UCLA returned to the end zone on its second drive of the game, set up by a career-long 39-yard run by Thompson-Robinson. Then the sophomore QB hit Philips again for a three-yard TD as UCLA built a 14-3 lead at the 4:48 mark of the opening quarter, its largest lead of the season and largest since a 14-3 lead over USC last season (Nov. 17, 2018). The second TD reception was Philips' fourth of the year and a personal-best in a game for the redshirt freshman wide receiver.
Stanford's Spencer Jorgensen blocked a Wade Lees punt and Brycen Tremayne recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown with 1:29 to go in the first quarter to trim the Bruins' lead to 14-10. The 14 points scored against Stanford in the first quarter is the most by the Bruins in the opening period in a game this season.
After some great defense by the Bruins that saw UCLA record three sacks on third down on three-straight Stanford possessions, Kelley set up the Bruins' third touchdown drive of the first half with a 53-yard run that Thompson-Robinson punched in from the one-yard line at the 5:31 mark of the second quarter to lead 21-10. That scored would hold until halftime.
The Bruins recorded a total of five sacks in the first half, which was the most by the UCLA defense since recording six in the season-opening win over Texas A&M on Sept. 3, 2017. UCLA would end the game with a total of seven sacks. The 21 first-half points are the most scored this season by the Bruins and the most scored in the initial half of a game since it also had 21 against USC a year ago.
UCLA opened the second half with a season-best 43-yard field goal by JJ Molson to extend its lead to 24-10 with 11:02 to go in the third quarter. He then surpassed that mark with a 49-yard field goal later in the third (3:12) to push the Bruins' lead to 27-10.
With the game secured, Kelley scored the Bruins' final touchdown of the game on a season-high 54-yard run with 6:55 remaining in the contest to extend the lead to 34-10. Stanford engineered a seven-play, 75-yard drive to score its first offensive touchdown of the game on a six-yard run by Cameron Scarlett with 2:50 to go. The two-point conversion failed to provide the 34-16 final.
The Bruins return to action next weekend at the Rose Bowl for Homecoming/Bruin Family Weekend when they host No. 17 Arizona State on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 4:30 p.m. PT on the Pac-12 Networks.
