Bruins Outlast Beavers in Five

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Redshirtย sophomore Emily Ryan and redshirt freshman Lexi Hadrych both set career highs in kills, whileย seniors Savvy Simo and Cali Thompson, junior Mac May and sophomore Devon Chang all posted double-doubles, as the Bruins defeated Oregon State in five sets on Sunday at Gill Coliseum. Set scores were 25-23, 25-15, 28-30, 24-26, 16-14.
Hadrychย recorded 15 kills, while Ryan had 11 kills and no errors in 20 attempts for a .550 hitting percentage, adding seven blocks, which tied a personal best. May led all players with 19 kills to go with 11 digs, Simo notched 18 digs and 10 kills, Thompson had 32 assists and 10 digs and Chang tallied 28 assists and 11 digs. Junior Jenny Mosserย had 13 kills and five blocks, sophomore Kelli Barry produced 17 digs and redshirtย sophomore Sabrina Smith registered five kills and four blocks. The Bruins (10-7, 5-3 Pac-12), who defeated Oregon State for the 22nd straight time, hit .280 for the match with 13 blocks.
In the opening set, Oregon State (8-11, 2-6 Pac-12) led by as much as three at 8-5 before the Bruins scored five of the next six on two Ryan kills, a Hadrych kill, a Ryan/Mosser block and an OSU error to go up 10-9. Despite five more ties, the Bruins didn't trail for the rest of the set. At 13-all, a Beaver service error, a Hadrych kill, a May solo block and kill and a Ryan solo stuff put the Bruins up by a set-best five. Oregon State rebounded to even the score at 22, but the Bruins posted three of the last four points, including two on Hadrych kills to win the first, 25-23. Hadrychย registered five kills, Ryan added four, Simo had six digs and three kills, May posted three kills and Thompson recorded three digs. The Bruins out-hit the Beavers, .333 to .229.
The Bruins led from start-to-finish in set two, scoring the first four points on two May kills and a Ryan solo block and combo with Mosser. UCLA extended the lead to six at 8-2 after Ryan added a kill and teamed up with Mosser on two blocks. At 17-12, the Bruins scored eight of the next 11 points to win the second by a score of 25-15. The first three points came on Smith, Ryan and Hadrych kills, which was followed by a Thompson ace. The final four Bruin points in the second came on Mosser kills. Mosser had five kills and three blocks, May added four kills, Simo recorded six digs, Ryan had four blocks, Barry notched four digs and Smith had three kills. The Bruins out-hit the Beavers, .412 to .069.
The Bruins scored the first three points of set three, but that would be their largest advantage. Oregon State also had a set-best lead of three, as late as 24-21, before the Beavers served an error, Smith and May teamed up for a block and Simo notched an ace to even things at 24. The score would be tied at 25, 26, 27 and 28, as the Bruins all told thwarted seven set points before Oregon State eventually won the third, 30-28. Hadrych and Mosser had four kills each, May added five digs and three kills, Simo had three kills and Chang notched three digs. The Bruins were out-hit, .341 to .190.
It looked like the Bruins would win the fourth, but the Beavers came back late to force a fifth. At 5-4 Bruins, two Hadrych kills, a Smith kill and block with Simo and two OSU errors put UCLA up by a set-best four at 11-7. The Bruins still led as late as 21-20, but four in a row for Oregon State gave the home team three set points. Two errors and a Simo kill saved the three attempts, but the Beavers notched the next two points to extend the match. May had four kills and four digs, Barry added four digs and Chang, Simo and freshman Mari Hinkle each recorded three digs. The Bruins were out-hit, .293 to .195.
UCLA trailed by two in the fifth set at 6-4, but scored four in a row on kills by Mosser and May, a Smith solo block and an OSU error to go up by two. The Bruins led for the rest of the set. At 9-8, three May kills and a Thompson ace during a 4-1 run put UCLA up 13-9. The Beavers wouldn't quit though, scoring five of the next six to even the score at 14. However, a May kill and a Simo block gave the Bruins the 16-14 win. May had five kills in the deciding set, Barry added five digs and Chang had three digs. The Bruins out-hit the Beavers, .308 to .208.
The Bruins host Stanford on Friday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. The match will air on ESPNU.
