Bruins Open Fall Portion of '19-'20 Season at Erin Hills

The UCLA men's golf team opens the 2019 portion of its 2019-2020 schedule on Sunday at the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills. The three-day, 54-hole tournament runs from Sunday through Tuesday at the par-72 layout at Erin Hills Golf Course, which hosted the 2017 U.S. Open.

The starting lineup for the Bruins will consist of senior Hidetoshi Yoshihara, juniors Devon Bling and Eddy Lai and sophomores Sean Maruyama and Bryan Wiyang Teoh. Sophomore Rory Feng will be playing as an individual. Tee times begin on Sunday and Monday at 9 a.m. CT/7 a.m. PT and on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. CT/6:30 a.m. PT.

Joining the Bruins in the 12-team field are host Marquette, Ball State, Georgia State, Indiana, Liberty, Miami Ohio, Northwestern, Purdue, UC Davis, USF and Wisconsin.

Teoh qualified in the No. 1 spot for this tournament after appearing in six events as a freshman. He posted a 70.8 scoring average, three Top 10s, four Top 20s, eight under-par rounds and five rounds in the 60s. Teoh tied for second at the Bill Cullum Invitational (-8, 208), shooting a 6-under 66 in round two and closing with a 2-under 70. He tied for fifth at the Arizona Medalist (-7, 209), opening with rounds of 4-under 68 and 3-under 69. Teoh's first Top 10 of the season came at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational, where he tied for 10th (E, 216), which included a 2-under 70 in his final round. He also tied for 11th at the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational (-8, 205), shooting a 3-under 68 in round one and a 6-under 65 in round three. Teoh was a combined 6-under in his second rounds and 9-under in his final rounds.

Yoshihara was the only Bruin last season to appear in all 13 team events, recording a 71.6 scoring average, two Top 10s, six Top 20s, 14 under-par rounds and nine rounds in the 60s. Yoshihara posted his first collegiate victory at the SeattleU Redhawk Invitational in April, shooting a 13-under 200. He opened with a 4-under 67 and then fired a 9-under 62 in round two, which tied single-round school records for score and relation to par. Yoshihara tied for eighth at the Arizona Intercollegiate (-8, 205) and was under par in all three rounds (4-under 67, 3-under 68, 1-under 70). His other Top 20s came at The Prestige (T-17, +4, 217), the Wyoming Cowboy Classic (T-17, -4, 212), the Golfweek Conference Challenge (T-19, -1, 143) and the Windon Memorial Classic (T-20, +2, 218). Yoshihara opened the Wyoming Classic with a 5-under 67 and also shot a pair of 1-under 69s at the NCAA Pullman Regional, where he finished at 1-under 209.

Lai earned All-Pac-12 Conference Honorable Mention accolades a year ago, recording a 71.7 scoring average, three Top 10s, six Top 20s, 16 under-par rounds and nine rounds in the 60s. Lai had a strong close to the season, tying for sixth at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic (-7, 209) and tying for seventh at the Pac-12 Men's Golf Championship (-1, 283). He was under par in five of those seven rounds, including all three at the Wyoming Classic, where he opened with a 4-under 68. Lai was seventh at the Bill Cullum Invitational (-4, 212), opening and closing with 2-under 70s. He also tied for 15th at the Southwestern Invitational (+2, 218) and the SeattleU Redhawk Invitational (-4, 209) and tied for 18th at the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational (-6, 207). Lai concluded both the SeattleU and Ka'anapali Invites with back-to-back rounds in the 60s.

Bling was also an All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention selection in a busy season which also saw him play at the 2019 Masters and U.S. Open. He had a 71.3 scoring average, recording three Top 10s, five Top 20s, 13 under-par rounds and eight rounds in the 60s. Bling saved his best for the end of the season, when he was under par in all three events. He tied for second at the SeattleU Redhawk Invitational (-11, 202), was sixth at the Pac-12 Men's Golf Championship (-2, 282) and tied for 17th at the NCAA Pullman Regional (-6, 204). Bling was under par in six of his last 10 rounds, firing three rounds in the 60s at the SeattleU Invite, including a 5-under 66 in round two. He also had a 5-under 66 at the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational, where he finished at 4-under 209. Bling tied for 10th at the Southwestern Invitational (E, 216) and was 16th at The Prestige (+3, 216).

Maruyama was recognized on the All-Freshman Team last season, tallying a 73.0 scoring average, two Top 10s, three Top 20s, five under-par rounds and four in the 60s. He tied for fourth at the Southwestern Invitational (-3, 213), recording a 7-under 65 in the second round. Maruyama tied for seventh at the SeattleU Redhawk Invitational (-7, 206), opening with a 6-under 65 and closing with a 1-under 70. He also tied for 20th at the Windon Memorial Classic (+2, 218), where he shot a 3-under 69 in the first round. Maruyama's other round in the 60s came at the Arizona Intercollegiate, as he shot a 5-under 66 in round two and finished at 2-under 211.

Feng appeared in just two tournaments as a freshman, both as individuals. He tied for 61st at the Northern Intercollegiate (+15, 231), opening with an even-par 72. Feng also tied for 69th at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational (+13, 229).
