BRUINS TRAVEL TO UTAH AND COLORADO
The UCLA women's volleyball team is on the road this weekend, traveling to Salt Lake City to take on No. 18 Utah on Friday at 6 p.m. PT/7 p.m. MT. The match will be broadcast on Pac-12 Network. After a travel day one state to the east, the Bruins will face Colorado in Boulder on Sunday at 1 p.m. PT/2 p.m. MT. The contest will air on ESPN2.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bruins are back on the road again next weekend, taking on Oregon on Friday, Oct. 18 at 6 p.m. and Oregon State on Sunday, Oct. 20 at 2 p.m. Both matches will air on Pac-12 Network.
BRUINS IN THE RANKINGS
The Bruins are just outside the Top 25 in the AVCA Coaches Poll for this week, receiving the 32nd-most votes (nine points). In the initial NCAA RPI rankings released on Monday, UCLA came in at No. 15.
NEWS AND NOTES
The Bruins were the last undefeated team in Pac-12 play, starting at 3-0, which marked their first such start since 2007 ... UCLA had eight aces in consecutive matches against USC (Sept. 25) and Arizona State (Sept. 29). It marked the first time since October 2012 that UCLA had at least eight aces in back-to-back contests ... Michael Sealy won his 200th career contest as a head coach on Sept. 6 against Texas State ... senior Savvy Simo set a new career high with 19 kills against Washington on Sunday. It marked her sixth straight match with double figures in kills and eighth of the season. Simo also had double-doubles in both matches last weekend to give her five on the year ... junior Mac May also set a new personal best versus Washington with 29 kills, adding 15 digs for one of her two double-doubles last weekend. May hit over .400 against both UW and Arizona State. She leads the team with 15 service aces, has posted at least one in eight matches and multiple aces four times ... the Bruins have hit .300 or better in two of the last three contests behind the setting of senior Cali Thompson and sophomore Devon Chang. Thompson has a pair of double-doubles in her last four matches, serving an ace in three of those contests ... sophomore Kelli Barry had her streak of double-figure digs contests snapped at 10 against Washington. She is still tops on the team with 3.88 digs per set ... junior Jenny Mosser has stepped up her game on the defensive side of the ball and has produced at least six digs in three of her last four matches and six blocks in two of her last four ... redshirt sophomore Emily Ryan has at least four blocks in three of her last four matches, including seven against USC, which set a personal best ... UCLA will celebrate its first 100 years with a year-long, university-wide Centennial Celebration. UCLA Athletics has several Centennial Celebration plans and giveaways in store for designated home events, including a set of 13 Centennial pins highlighting each sport, as well as a souvenir mosaic poster that features personal photos submitted by UCLA fans. The fall sport Centennial events are: Football - Sept. 7 vs. San Diego State; Men's Soccer - Sept. 26 vs. UC Irvine; Women's Soccer - Sept. 27 vs. California; Men's Water Polo - Oct. 4 vs. Long Beach State; Women's Volleyball - Oct. 25 vs. Stanford.
SCOUTING THE UTAH UTES
Utah (11-4) is tied with UCLA, California and Stanford atop the Pac-12 Conference standings with a 3-1 record. The Utes have swept Colorado and Arizona State, defeated Arizona in four and lost to Oregon in five. Utah is averaging 13.69 kills, 1.15 aces, 14.07 digs and 2.98 blocks per set, hitting .306 as a team. Junior Dani Drews is tops on the squad with 4.40 kills per set, while junior Kenzie Koerber is second at 3.04 kps. Sophomore Saige Ka'aha'aina-Torres quarterbacks the offense and is posting 10.94 assists per set. Senior Brianna Doehrmann is first with 3.58 digs per set, while redshirt senior Berkeley Oblad and redshirt sophomore Phoebe Grace are each averaging 1.37 blocks per set.
THE SERIES: UCLA VS. UTAH
The Bruins lead the all-time series, 18-5, and own a 10-4 edge as Pac-12 opponents. In the only matchup last season, UCLA won in four in Salt Lake City, where the Bruins hold a 6-3 advantage. Last year's victory snapped UCLA's two-match losing streak to Utah.
SCOUTING THE COLORADO BUFFALOES
Colorado (8-6, 0-4 Pac-12) will be looking for its first conference win on Friday against USC before hosting UCLA. The Buffaloes are averaging 11.98 kills, 1.02 aces, 12.69 digs and 2.59 blocks per set, hitting .230 as a team. Senior Justine Spann has 33 percent of the team's kills and is averaging 4.00 kills per set. Sophomore Jenna Ewert handles the setting duties and is posting 9.38 assists per set. Senior Rachel Whipple is first with 3.56 digs per set, while redshirt sophomore Meegan Hart (1.19) and freshman Sterling Parker (1.08) are each averaging over one block per set.
THE SERIES: UCLA VS. COLORADO
The Bruins own a 13-4 all-time lead against the Buffaloes, including a 10-4 mark since Colorado joined the conference in 2011. In the only meeting last season, the Buffs won in three in Westwood. Previous to that loss, UCLA had won three in a row. The Bruins are 5-2 in Boulder.
