BERKELEY, Calif. -ย Senior Savvy Simo produced 10 kills and no hitting errors in 19 attempts for a .526 hitting percentage, adding nine digs and a career-best three aces, as the Bruins defeated No. 20 California in three sets on Friday at Haas Pavilion. Set scores were 25-17, 25-18, 26-24.
ย
Junior Mac May had 10 kills, five digs and two aces, redshirt freshman Lexi Hadrych added nine kills and redshirt sophomore Emily Ryan posted seven kills and no errors in seven attempts. The Bruins (14-10, 9-6 Pac-12) hit .347 as a team behind the setting of senior Cali Thompson (20 assists, three digs) and sophomore Devon Chang (17 assists, three digs). Junior Jenny Mosser registered six kills, sophomore Kelli Barry had five digs and redshirt sophomore Sabrina Smith notched three kills and three digs.
ย
The only time the Bruins trailed in set one was at 1-0 and 2-1, as four in a row on kills by Mosser, Simo and Smith and a Cal attack error put UCLA up for good. At 20-14, a Ryan kill and back-to-back Golden Bear attack errors increased the lead to a set-best nine at 23-14. UCLA would win the opener on a Mosser kill to wrap up a 25-17 victory. The Bruins hit .552, with 17 kills and only one error in 29 attempts. Simo was 6-for-6, Ryan was 3-for-3 and Hadrych was 3-for-5. Cal was held to a .148 hitting percentage.
ย
The Bruins led wire-to-wire in set two, scoring eight of the first 10 points, as Ryan and Simo each posted two kills, May and Chang served aces, Mosser and Smith combined for a block and Cal had an attack error. A 5-0 run for the Golden Bears evened the score at 10, but despite five ties, the Bruins never trailed. Even at 14, six in a row for UCLA on a Simo kill and solo block, a Hadrych kill and three Cal errors made it 20-14, as the Bruins ended up winning the second, 25-18. May led the Bruins with five kills in the second, while Simo was 4-for-7 with no errors and four digs. The Bruins out-hit the Golden Bears, .257 to .161.
ย
UCLA held an early 9-5 lead in set three, as Mosser and Hadrych both had two kills during the run. Cal rebounded with an 11-4 run to go up by a set-best three at 16-13. Trailing 17-15, the Bruins scored four in a row on a Hadrych kill, back-to-back Simo aces and a May kill to go back up by two. Cal responded again and held leads of 20-19 and 21-20, but kills from Hadrych and May put UCLA back up. Following a Golden Bear sideout, a Mosser kill and a May ace gave the Bruins two match points. Cal saved them both, but a Ryan/Mosser block earned a third match point. Smith would knock an over-pass across the net to finish up a 26-24 win. Hadrych and May both had four kills in the third, while Mosser added three. Barry and Simo each posted three digs. The Bruins were out-hit, .344 to .265.

The Bruins return to the court on Sunday at 12 p.m. at No. 4 Stanford. The match will air on Pac-12 Network Bay Area.
