Simo Reaches 1,000 Digs, Bruins Beat Oregon in Five

LOS ANGELES - Senior Savvy Simo reached the 1,000-career dig mark during the second-to-last point of the match and punctuated a victory with a clinching kill to send the Bruins to a five-set win over Oregon on Friday at the John Wooden Center. Set scores were 24-26, 25-17, 25-18, 23-25, 15-6.
Needing 16 digs to become UCLA's 25th member of the 1,000-dig club, Simo hit the number on the nose, adding 14 kills for her seventh double-double of the season. Junior Mac May led all players with 22 kills to go with eight digs, four blocks and three aces. Redshirt sophomore Emily Ryan set a new career high with 10 blocks, adding eight kills, as the Bruins (15-11, 10-7 Pac-12) had a season-best 14.5 roofs.
Redshirt sophomore Sabrina Smith posted seven kills and no hitting errors in 10 attempts for a .700 hitting percentage with four blocks. Senior Cali Thompson recorded her sixth double-double of the season on 20 assists and 10 digs, while sophomore Devon Chang had 25 assists and seven digs, with the duo setting UCLA to a .297 hitting percentage. Sophomore Kelli Barry notched 18 digs and eight assists, junior Jenny Mosser had seven kills and four blocks, redshirt freshman Lexi Hadrych added a career-best six blocks to go with four digs and three kills and freshman Mari Hinkle had six digs.
Neither team led by more than three in an opening set which featured 13 ties and five lead changes. Trailing 14-11, the Bruins scored four in a row on two Oregon (7-19, 3-14 Pac-12) errors and back-to-back blocks by Hadrych and Smith and May and Smith. UCLA would end up having a set point at 24-23, but the Ducks scored the next three to win the opener by a score of 26-24. Smith was 3-for-3 in kill attempts in the first set, adding three blocks. May had three kills and Simo notched four digs. The Bruins were out-hit, .312 to .226.
The Bruins trailed only twice at 1-0 and 2-1, scoring 11 of the next 13 to start a second-set rout. May and Simo each had two kills during the 11-2 run, Hadrych, Ryan and Smith also had kills and the Ducks committed four errors. The Bruins' lead reached double figures for the first time on a May ace to make it 18-8, with a Mosser kill extending it to a set-best 11. An Oregon service error on the Bruins' second set point wrapped up a 25-17 win. May was 6-for-14 with no errors in the second, adding three digs. Simo posted four digs and three kills, Ryan went 3-for-4 with no miscues, Barry added six digs and Chang had three. The Bruins out-hit the Ducks, .359 to .171.
The teams traded the first seven points of set three before the Bruins scored five in a row on three May kills, one from Smith and an Oregon error to go up 8-4. The Ducks waddled back into the set to even the score at 16. Tied at 17, the Bruins scored eight of the final nine points to take a 2-1 lead in the match. The first three points came on kills by May, Simo and Ryan. After a Duck sideout, UCLA netted the last five on a Simo kill and four Oregon errors to win it 25-18. May recorded eight kills, Barry had five digs and Simo posted four kills and four digs. The Bruins out-hit the Ducks, .353 to .188.

May recorded three kills and an ace during the 11-3 run, Ryan added two kills and three blocks (solo, one with Hadrych, one with Mosser) and Mosser posted two kills. The Bruins' last lead of the fourth was 20-19, as Oregon scored six of the next nine to force a fifth set. May had four kills and four digs in the fourth, Thompson added four digs and Ryan had three blocks. Mosser posted three kills and Barry and Hinkle both notched three digs, as the Bruins were out-hit, .244 to .146.
