UCLA HOSTS OREGON AND OREGON STATE
The Bruins close out their regular-season home schedule this weekend, hosting Oregon on Friday at 6 p.m. at the John Wooden Center and Oregon State on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. Both matches will be televised on Pac-12 Network Los Angeles. Seniors Savvy Simo and Cali Thompson will be honored prior to Sunday's match.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bruins are on the road for the final two matches of the regular season, taking on Arizona on Wednesday, Nov. 27 at 1 p.m. PT/2 p.m. MT and USC on Friday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. Both matches will be televised on Pac-12 Network. On Sunday, Dec. 1, ESPNU will air the NCAA Selection Show at 5:30 p.m.
BRUINS IN THE RANKINGS
Junior Mac May is 12th in the nation in points per set (5.26), 15th in kills per set (4.61) and 41st in attacks per set (11.10). As a team, the Bruins are 23rd in the country in assists per set (13.07), 30th in kps (13.89) and 50th in hitting percentage (.245). Among Pac-12 teams, UCLA ranks second in aps and third in kps. May is first in aces per set (0.35), second in pps and third in kps, while sophomore Kelli Barry is ninth in digs per set (3.49).
TEAM NOTES
Eleven of UCLA's 14 victories have been by sweep ... UCLA hit a season-best .347 at California on Friday ... the Bruins are 14-0 when winning the second set ... the Bruins were the last undefeated team in Pac-12 play, starting at 3-0, which marked their first such start since 2007 ... UCLA had eight aces in consecutive matches against USC (Sept. 25) and Arizona State (Sept. 29). It marked the first time since October 2012 that UCLA had at least eight aces in back-to-back contests ... Michael Sealy won his 200th career contest as a head coach on Sept. 6 against Texas State.
PLAYER NOTES
**On the milestone alert, junior Mac May became the 29th Bruin to reach 1,000-career kills on Nov. 9 against No. 16 Utah. She is four aces away from becoming the 19th to reach 100 aces. May would become the 13th Bruin to post at least 1,000 kills and 100 aces.
**Senior Savvy Simo is 16 digs away from becoming the 25th member of the 1,000-dig club.
**May reached the 20-kill mark for the eighth time in her career and the fifth time this season when she produced 20 on Nov. 7 against Colorado. She posted her team-best seventh double-double of 2019 on Oct. 25 versus then-No. 2 Stanford, adding 21 kills two days later against then-No. 15 California. May is tops on the squad with 21 double-figure kills matches, setting a new career high with 29 against Washington on Oct. 6. She also leads the team with 29 service aces, having posted at least one in 14 of her last 16 matches and multiple aces seven times on the season.
**Simo produced a season-best 20 digs at Washington State on Nov. 1, the fifth time in her career she has reached the 20-dig plateau. She has 13 double-figure digs matches, 12 double-figure kills contests and six double-doubles. Simo, who set a new career high in kills (19) in the home match against Washington, also has 10 aces in her last 10 contests, including a career-high three at Cal on Friday.
**A good barometer of the result of a match is the hitting percentage, and the Bruins have hit at least .280 in seven of their last eight wins behind the setting of senior Cali Thompson and sophomore Devon Chang. Thompson has five double-doubles and has at least one ace in eight of her 16 Pac-12 matches. Chang notched her second double-double of the year at Oregon State on Oct. 20.
**Redshirt freshman Lexi Hadrych has double figures in kills in six of her last nine, averaging 3.06 kills per set during her last nine contests. Hadrych posted a career-best 15 kills at Oregon State. She has hit over .300 in five of her last nine.
**Redshirt sophomore Emily Ryan was perfect in Friday's victory at Cal, producing seven kills and no errors in seven attempts. Ryan, who added nine kills at Stanford on Sunday, has 23 kills in her last three (2.30 per set). She was also error-free against Oregon State (11-0-20) on Oct. 20 when she tied a personal best with seven blocks.
**Sophomore Kelli Barry posted the first double-double of her Bruin career with 17 digs and 10 assists in the home match against California. She has double figures in digs in 16 matches this season. Barry also has an ace in five of her last 11.
**Junior Jenny Mosser notched her third double-figure kills match of the season with 10 in the home match against Cal. Her season high in kills is 14 versus Washington State (Oct. 4). Mosser tied a career high with four aces on Oct. 18 at Oregon.
**Redshirt sophomore Sabrina Smith had 12 blocks in two matches against Colorado and Utah, tying a career high with seven versus the Utes. It marks the second time she has produced seven blocks in a match this season (home vs. Cal).
SCOUTING THE OREGON DUCKS
Oregon (7-18, 3-13 Pac-12) has dropped five in a row coming into Friday's contest. The Ducks are averaging 13.05 kills, 1.40 aces, 14.61 digs and 2.08 blocks per set, hitting .213 as a team. Senior Ronika Stone is first on the team with 3.31 kills per set, while sophomore Brooke Nuneviller is second at 3.05 kps. Redshirt freshman Kylie Robinson (8.47 assists per set) and freshman Elise Ferreira (4.69) split the setting duties. Nuneviller is also first with 3.60 digs per set, while redshirt freshman Karson Bacon is averaging 0.99 blocks per set.
THE SERIES: UCLA VS. OREGON
The Bruins are 56-14 all-time against Oregon, which has won three in a row in the series, including a sweep in Eugene on Oct. 18. UCLA is 31-4 at home versus the Ducks.
SCOUTING THE OREGON STATE BEAVERS
Oregon State (9-18, 3-13 Pac-12), which is at USC on Thursday, has dropped seven in a row, including a pair of five-setters last weekend against Arizona State and Arizona. The Beavers are averaging 12.50 kills, 1.02 aces, 14.71 digs and 2.17 blocks per set, hitting .195 as a team. Junior Haylie Bennett is first on the team with 3.03 kills per set. Sophomore Maddie Sheehan (7.60 assists per set) and senior Montanna Gubrud (6.21) are splitting the setting duties. Junior Grace Massey tops the team with 4.19 digs per set, while senior Serena Bruin is first with 1.11 blocks per set.
THE SERIES: UCLA VS. OREGON STATE
The Bruins extended their winning streak to 22 straight against Oregon State following a five-set victory in Corvallis on Oct. 20. Devon Chang (28 assists, 11 digs), Mac May (19 kills, 11 digs), Savvy Simo (18 digs, 10 kills and Cali Thompson (32 assists, 10 digs) all had double-doubles, Lexi Hadrych posted 15 kills and Emily Ryan added 11 kills.
