UCLA Set to Compete in Trojan Diving Invitational
November 07, 2019 | Swimming & Diving
LOS ANGELES โ Just seven days removed from its first interscholastic competition of the 2019-20 season, the UCLA diving team will head across town this weekend to compete in the Trojan Diving Invitational on the campus of USC.
The invite will run from Friday, Nov. 8 through Sunday, Nov. 10 at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center. Prelims start each day at 11:00 a.m. with finals beginning at varying times in the afternoon.
Other teams sending divers to the competition include Cal, Utah, Cal Poly, Fresno State, Cal Baptist, UNLV, San Jose State, Azusa Pacific, and the host Trojans. The Bruins lead the field, alongside UNLV, with five entries in each of the women's championships. This weekend marks the first time this season that UCLA will compete in platform.
The Bruins are coming off a strong start to the season, with UCLA divers sweeping both 1-meter and 3-meter in dual meets at Arizona and Arizona State. Those wins on springboard helped the Bruins to wins over both the Wildcats (176-124) and Sun Devils (156-142).
Especially impressive were juniors Ruby Neave and Alice Yanovsky.
Neave won three of the four diving events UCLA competed in last week, claiming the 1M championship in both meets and topping the 3M field at the ASU meet. Having missed the first two years of her college career due to injury, Neave recorded NCAA Zones-qualifying scores in her first two outings on 1M including a season-high of 285.60 at ASU.
Yanovsky was the 3M champion at the Arizona dual meet with a score of 264.15, the highest by a Bruin so far this season. The Santa Clarita, Calif. native has qualified for Zones in 3M in each of the past two seasons.
Also competing this weekend for the Bruins will be sophomore Veronica Thompson and freshmen Hannah Butler and Katie Shaheen.
Thompson missed the bulk of her freshman season due to injury, but is one of the Bruins' top performers on tower. At last year's Trojan Diving Invitational, she set collegiate bests in both 1M (241.10) and platform (213.40).
Butler competed at both Arizona duals, logging top scores 253.28 in 1M and 231.53 in 3M. Her 1M score is less than 12 points below a Zones-qualifying mark.
Shaheen will be making her NCAA debut. She's a former CIF SSC Champion in 1-meter, and qualified for California State Finals in three of her four high school seasons at Crescenta Valley HS.
