Bruins Sweep Notre Dame, Advance to Second Round

MADISON, Wis. -ย Senior Savvy Simo and junior Mac May combined for 31 kills and just one hitting error in 63 attempts for a .476 hitting percentage, as the Bruins swept their NCAA First Round match against Notre Dame on Friday at the UW Field House. Set scores were 25-16, 25-19, 25-20.

The Bruins improve to 19-11 overall and advance to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday at 4 p.m. PT/6 p.m. CT. UCLA will take on No. 4-seed Wisconsin.

May produced 20 kills and a .487 hitting percentage in 39 attempts, adding nine digs, while Simo was error-free with 11 kills in 24 swings (.458) to go with nine digs and three blocks. Senior Cali Thompson recorded 21 assists and eight digs and sophomore Devon Chang had 20 assists and six digs, as the duo set the Bruins to a season-best .371 hitting percentage. Sophomore Kelli Barry had 12 digs, redshirt freshman Lexi Hadrych tallied seven kills and junior Jenny Mosser added five blocks and four kills. Redshirt sophomore Emily Ryan had four kills and four blocks, freshman Mari Hinkle notched five digs and redshirt freshman Tristin Savage added three blocks.

The Bruins dropped the opening point of the match, but scored seven of the next nine and never looked back. Simo had two kills and teamed up with redshirt sophomore Sabrina Smith on a block, Mosser added a kill and Notre Dame (19-10) made three errors. Leading 18-13, six of seven for the Bruins gave them a set-best advantage of 10. Back-to-back May kills and one from Hadrych opened the run. After an Irish sideout, a May kill, a Mosser/Ryan block and a Mosser kill made it 24-14. On set point number three, a Ryan kill finished up a 25-16 victory. Simo was 4-for-8 with no errors in the first set, while May was 4-for-10. Barry and Thompson notched four digs apiece and Chang and Hinkle each had three. The Bruins hit .375 (13-1-32) and held the Fighting Irish to a .000 percentage.

The second set featured nine ties and five lead changes, as the Bruins pulled away to take a 2-0 advantage in the match. Down 11-9, a pair of May kills and a Notre Dame attack error put the Bruins up by one. The Fighting Irish would take a 15-14 edge to the media timeout before UCLA went on a 5-0 run to go up for good. Simo started the run with two kills and a block with Savage, which was followed by a Notre Dame attack error and a Savage/Hadrych roof to go up 19-15. Up 23-19, a May kill and a Notre Dame attack error closed out a 25-19 victory. May recorded half of the Bruins' 16 kills in the second set, Simo was 4-for-7 with no errors and four digs, Barry had four digs and Hadrych added three kills. The Bruins out-hit the Irish, .314 to .053.

Despite a couple more ties, the Bruins didn't relinquish the lead for the rest of the match. At 11-10, a 5-2 run on kills from Mosser and Simo, a Savage/Mosser block and two Notre Dame errors brought the advantage to 16-12. Up 19-17, kills by May, Simo and Ryan and an ace from Hinkle during a 4-1 run made it a set-best, five-point lead at 23-18. At 23-20, kills from Savage and Simo wrapped up a 25-20 win. May was 8-for-14 in the third set with no errors to go with five digs, while Simo was 3-for-9 with three digs. Barry added four digs and Mosser and Ryan each had three blocks.
