LOS ANGELES - Redshirtย junior Rachel Garcia struck out 13 in seven innings in a 4-0 shutout win over Ole Miss, while freshman Megan Faraimo followed that up with a five-inning, 10-strikeout no-hitter in an 8-0 victory over Fresno State on Saturday at Easton Stadium.
In game one versus Ole Miss (6-2), Garcia fanned the side in the fifth and seventh frames, as well as a pair in the second, fourth and sixth. She scattered six hits and walked none in her complete-game victory. At the plate,ย the Bruins (6-0) spread six hits across five batters, as redshirt sophomore Aaliyah Jordan posted two hits.ย
A key defensive play helped keep the Rebels off the scoreboard in the top of the third. Following a leadoff triple by Ally Mena, Mikayla Allee tapped a comebacker to Garcia, who threw to first for the out. Mena would break for home, but ended up stopping short of the plate, getting caught in a rundown and ultimately being tagged out for the double play.
In the bottom of the third, the Bruins got on the board, as freshman Kelli Godinย reached on an infield single, moved to second on a sacrifice by sophomore Briana Perez, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single to left from junior Bubba Nickles.
UCLA added another in the fifth, with sophomore Kinsley Washington leading off with a double and scoring when Godin reached on a sacrifice bunt attempt and overthrow by the Rebels.ย
In the sixth, the Bruins scored twice thanks to two Ole Miss errors. With senior Zoe Shaw at third and freshman Anna Vines at first with two outs, Vines took off for second, but the throw down tipped off the second baseman's glove and into the outfield, allowing Shaw to score the Bruins' third run and Vines to move up to third. Washington then tapped a ball back to the circle, which was misplayed, allowing Vines to plate UCLA's fourth run.
In game two against Fresno State (5-4), Faraimoย retired the final 14 batters she faced in recording the first no-hitter of her career. Two walks in the first inning were the only baserunners for the Bulldogs, as Faraimo, who also struck out the side in the first, fanned two each in the second, third and fourth frames. The no-hitter was the 110th in UCLA history.ย
At the plate, the Bruins (7-0) had 11 hits from nine players, as Jordan and Garcia both produced two-hit contests.
UCLA scored three times in the second, as Garcia drew a one-out walk, senior Brianna Tautalafuaย singled to right and both scored on a Shaw triple to right. Washington followed with a single up the middle to make it 3-0.
In the third, Jordan reached on a one-out single, and was pinch-run for by sophomore Alana Snow, who moved around the bases on a single by senior Taylor Pack, a single from Garcia and a Tautalafua sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 4-0.
The Bruins added two more in the fourth. With one out, Perez doubled to left-center, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a Nickles single to left. A Jordan single advanced Nickles to second, and she would score one out later on a Garcia double to left to make it 6-0.
In the fifth, UCLA invoked the mercy rule for the third time this season. With Washington at third and Vines at second and one out, Perez tapped one back to the circle, but Washington was able to slide under the tag on the throw home to get the Bruins' seventh run. Nickles followed with an RBI grounder to second to bring in Vines with the mercy-rule run.
The Bruins finish up play at the Stacy Winsbergย Memorial Tournament on Sunday against UC Riverside at 2 p.m. and Loyola Marymount at 4:30 p.m. Free live audio and live stats will be available on UCLABruins.com.
