LAS VEGAS – Jaylen Hands recorded 22 points and 11 rebounds to guide the UCLA men's basketball team past Stanford, 79-72, in a first-round contest at the Pac-12 Tournament on Wednesday night.
UCLA (17-15) will take on Arizona State (21-9) in a quarterfinal game on Thursday at 6 p.m.
Against the Cardinal (15-16), the Bruins never trailed. UCLA pushed its advantage to 36-22 at halftime and led by as many as 26 points midway through the second half.
Stanford used a late rally, trimming UCLA's lead to as few as five points (77-72) with 16 seconds to play. Hands made a pair of free throws with 15 seconds remaining as the Bruins held on for the seven-point win.
Hands, who totaled a career-high 11 rebounds, made 7 of 18 shots from the field, including 2 of 4 attempts from 3-point range. Chris Smith (14 points), Jalen Hill (12 points) and Kris Wilkes (12 points) were UCLA's other players to score in double figures. Hill registered his third double-double of the season.
"Our guys really, I thought, competed incredibly hard, defended hard," Bruins' interim head coach Murry Bartow said. "We had four guys in double figures, so we shared it a little bit. We moved it a little bit. We had two guys in double figures. It's not every day that a point guard gets a double-double with points and rebounds. That's a pretty neat double-double for him."
Wilkes' two successful free throws with 48 seconds to play in the game pushed his UCLA career point total to 1,000. He has become the 57th player in program history to have reached the 1,000-point milestone.
Stanford's Josh Sharma recorded 18 points and a team-leading 13 rebounds. Marcus Sheffield also scored 18 points for Stanford.
UCLA's game on Thursday against Arizona State at T-Mobile Arena will be televised by the Pac-12 Network. The radio broadcast will be available in the Los Angeles area on AM 570 (KLAC).
