TOP-RANKED BRUINS RESUME PAC-12 CONFERENCE PLAY AGAINST CALIFORNIA
The No. 1 UCLA softball team is back in Pac-12 Conference action this weekend, hosting California at Easton Stadium. The three-game series begins on Friday at 5 p.m., continues on Saturday at 7 p.m. and concludes on Sunday at 1 p.m. All three games will air live on Pac-12 Networks and will also have free live audio on UCLABruins.com.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bruins travel to Tempe next weekend to face No. 13 Arizona State. The three-game series starts on Friday, April 5 at 5 p.m., continues on Saturday, April 6 at 2 p.m. and wraps up on Sunday, April 7 at 4 p.m. The first and last contests will air on Pac-12 Networks, while the middle game will be televised on ESPN2.
BRUINS IN THE POLLS
UCLA checks in at No. 1 in all three national polls (NFCA/USA Softball/Softball America) this week for the third week in a row. The Bruins were selected first in the preseason Pac-12 Conference coaches poll.
KELLI GODIN EARNS SECOND-STRAIGHT PAC-12 FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK AWARD
For the second week in a row, Kelli Godin has been named Pac-12 Conference Freshman of the Week, earning the honor on Monday after recording four hits, four runs batted in, five runs scored and four stolen bases in Sunday's doubleheader sweep at CSUN.
In just two plate appearances in game one versus Saint Mary's, Godin had a single, a walk, three runs scored (re-entered as a runner in one inning) and three stolen bases. The three swipes against the Gaels were the second time this season Godin had accomplished the feat versus Saint Mary's, also doing so on Feb. 9. The three steals also tie a single-game school record.ย
In game two against CSUN, Godin tied season highs with three hits and three RBI, scoring twice and stealing another base. She singled in the second, and in the sixth inning, drove in three runs in two separate at-bats on an RBI triple and a two-run single.
UCLA has earned 10 Pac-12 weekly awards this season. It marks the Bruins' fifth conference Freshman of the Week award in seven weeks. Freshman Megan Faraimo has picked up three awards on Feb. 19, Feb. 26 and March 12. Redshirt junior Rachel Garcia has received five weekly honors (Player of the Week on March 19 and Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 12, Feb. 19, Feb. 26 and March 19).

Bruin opponents have scored runs in just 28 innings this season, and on 17 occasions, UCLA has scored in its next at-bat ... the Bruins set a season high with 17 hits on March 10 against Boston ... the 15 runs scored at Washington on March 17 were the second most this season for UCLA (17 vs. UC Riverside on Feb. 17). The Bruins have reached double digits in runs eight times ... the Bruins had an early 3-0 deficit at Long Beach State on March 10, marking just their second three-run deficit (largest) of the season. UCLA also trailed 4-1 to No. 16 Kentucky on Feb. 23 before scoring 11 unanswered runs to mercy the Wildcats ... the Bruins have nine comeback victories this season ... sophomore Briana Perez led off the March 8 game against Robert Morris with an inside-the-park home run. It marked the first inside-the-park homer for the Bruins since Andrea Duran on June 3, 2006 versus Texas ... redshirt junior Rachel Garcia has recorded either a win (13) or a save (2) in all 15 of her pitching appearances, posting eight double-figure strikeout contests. In each of her games, she has allowed zero or one earned run. Garcia has not given up an earned run in 26 2/3 consecutive innings ... meanwhile at the plate, Garcia drove in a career-high six at Washington on March 17, her second game this year with at least five RBI (Florida, Feb. 27). She had a stretch of eight consecutive hits against Washington (March 16-17), Saint Mary's (March 24) and CSUN (March 24). Garcia has hits in five in a row and runs in six straight ... redshirt sophomore Aaliyah Jordan has eight doubles in her last 10 games, including three versus Liberty on March 9 to become the sixth Bruin ever to post three two-baggers in the same contest. She has hits in 22 of her last 25 games, batting .432 (32-for-74) with three homers, 26 RBI and 13 doubles during that stretch ... Perez set new career highs with four hits and five runs batted in against Boston. The three runs scored also tied a personal best. The sophomore leads the Bruins with 14 multiple-hit games and has scored a run in 25 of 30 contests, including seven in a row ... junior Bubba Nickles compiled a 24-game hitting streak before it came to an end versus Colorado State on Feb. 24. During the streak, she hit .466 (34-for-73) with 10 home runs, 30 runs batted in and 27 runs scored. Only three UCLA hitting streaks were higher than Nickles' (Natasha Watley, 32 in 2001 and 29 in 2002, and Stacey Nuveman, 28 in 1997). Nickles has hits in 25 of 30 games, has driven in runs in 22 contests and scored in 20 ... freshman Kelli Godin has a hit in 11 of her last 12 games, with six of them being multiple-hit contests. Godin, who is a couple of handfuls shy of reaching the minimum number of plate appearances needed to qualify for the national rankings, stole her first 18 bases before getting caught on Tuesday against Cal State Fullerton. UCLA shattered a school record for most runs in one inning in a Feb. 17 victory over UC Riverside. The Bruins scored 16 runs in the first inning, including 13 before making an out. The 16-run outburst broke the previous school record of 13 runs scored on April 21, 1992 against Cal Poly Pomona. As far as national rankings go, the 16 runs are tied for the 11th-most runs in one inning, while the 16 first-inning runs are tied for the second-most, first-inning runs ever ... UCLA softball recorded its 1,900th victory in program history on March 8 against Robert Morris.
SCOUTING THE CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS
California (20-12) is 1-4 in Pac-12 play, having lost 2-of-3 at Utah (March 15-17) and two games in a rain-shortened series with Stanford (March 23-24). The Golden Bears are hitting .314 as a team with 27 home runs and 45 stolen bases, averaging 6.25 runs per game. Senior Lindsay Rood is first with a .474 batting average and 22 stolen bases, while sophomore Mikayla Coelho is first with seven home runs, tied for first with 25 runs batted in and second with a .363 average. Seniors Zoe Conley and Kamalani Dung have pitched 75 percent of Cal's innings, with Dung posting a 2.23 earned run average, an 8-5 record and 93 strikeouts in 78 1/3 innings, while Conley has a 3.76 ERA, a 6-7 mark and 70 strikeouts in 76 1/3 innings.
THE SERIES: UCLA VERSUS CALIFORNIA
UCLA is unbeaten in its last 14 games against California, winning 13 and tying one. The Bruins hold a 93-29-1 edge in the all-time series and are 48-8 at home versus the Golden Bears. UCLA has won six in a row against Cal at Easton Stadium.
