BRUINS IN THE POLLS
UCLA checks in at No. 1 in all three national polls (NFCA/USA Softball/Softball America) this week for the fifth week in a row. The Bruins were selected first in the preseason Pac-12 Conference coaches poll.
PACK AND FARAIMO PICK UP PAC-12 WEEKLY AWARDS
The Bruins earned a pair of Pac-12 Conference weekly awards on Monday, as senior Taylor Pack was named Player of the Week for the first time in her career, while Megan Faraimo recorded Pac-12 Freshman of the Week accolades for the fifth time this season and second week in a row.
Pack was instrumental in a UCLA offense which tallied 35 runs and 10 home runs in its three-game sweep at No. 19 Arizona State last weekend. She drove in 10 of those runs and hit three of the homers. Pack went 6-for-8 (.750) with five runs scored, three doubles and a walk, slugging 2.250 and posting an on base percentage of .778. On Friday (April 5), she had two hits which both left the yard. Pack's pair of two-run homers set a career high, while her four RBI tied a personal best. The next day, the senior tied a career high with three hits on two doubles, including one to drive in a run, and a two-run homer. Pack had just two plate appearances on Sunday (April 7), but made the most of them, drawing a walk and recording a three-run double, scoring twice. Pack is tied for second on the team with eight home runs and third with a .414 batting average and 36 runs batted in.
Faraimo struck out nine in a complete-game, two-hit shutout in the opening contest of the series, her only appearance against ASU. She retired the first 11 batters of the game, striking out the side in the second and fifth and two in the first, limiting the Sun Devils to a fourth-inning single and a fifth-inning double. Faraimo has a 0.91 earned run average, a 12-1 record and 98 strikeouts in 77 1/3 innings, pitching nine complete games, six solo shutouts and holding opponents to a .130 batting average.
In nine weeks of the season, the Bruins have earned at least one award eight times, including a pair on three occasions (Feb. 19 and Feb. 26) and a sweep on March 19. UCLA has earned 13 Pac-12 weekly awards this season. Along with it being Faraimo's fifth FOW (Feb. 19, Feb. 26, March 12 and April 1), the Bruins have won seven conference Freshman of the Week awards in nine weeks and four in a row after Kelli Godin picked up the honor on March 19 and March 25.
