EUGENE, Ore. - The UCLA men's golf team begins postseason play this week at the Eugene Country Club, taking part in the Pac-12 Conference Men's Golf Championship. The 72-hole, three-day tournament runs from Monday through Wednesday at the par-71, 7,044-yard layout.
The Pac-12s are a six-counting-five tournament, unlike the standard five-counting-four events, with the Bruins' starting lineup consisting of seniors Jack Ireland, Cole Madey and Patrick Murphy, junior Hidetoshi Yoshihara and sophomores Devon Bling and Eddy Lai. Monday's play will be 36 holes, with UCLA starting off the first tee at 8:21 a.m. in the order of Ireland, Murphy, Lai, Bling, Yoshihara and Madey. On Wednesday, Pac-12 Networks will air live coverage of the final-round finishing holes starting at 2 p.m.
The Bruins, who are ranked 30th in the latest Golfstat rankings, will be joined in the field by No. 2 Arizona State, No. 6 USC, No. 14 California, No. 18 Stanford, No. 39 Oregon, No. 44 Arizona, No. 50 Oregon State, Colorado, Utah, Washington and Washington State.
UCLA has been on a roll, posting back-to-back wins at the SeattleU Redhawk Invitational (April 1-2) and the Wyoming Cowboy Classic (April 8-9), as well as a third-place finish at the ASU Thunderbird Collegiate (April 12-13), in its final three events of the regular season, combining to shoot 67-under par. All told, the Bruins have six Top 4 finishes this season. In 32 rounds, UCLA is a combined 60-under par, including 44-under in their second rounds. The Bruins have shot in red figures in 17 of 32 rounds.
Just like the team results, the Bruins have had two wins and a third-place finish on the individual level in the last three tournaments. Yoshihara won the SeattleU Redhawk Invite, his second-career win, posting a final score of 13-under 200. Madey won a third-hole playoff to claim his first individual title at the Wyoming Classic, shooting a 13-under 203. At the regular-season finale at ASU, Murphy tied for third with a score of 6-under 207.
There is a close battle for the scoring average lead, with all six Bruins competing at Pac-12s separated by .5 points. Madey is first at 71.5, followed closely by Yoshihara (71.6), Ireland (71.7), Murphy (71.7), Bling (71.8) and Lai (72.0). Ireland is tops on the squad with three Top 10 finishes, while Bling, Lai, Madey, Murphy and Yoshihara all have two. Madey's 15 under-par rounds are first on the team. Lai also has double-digit rounds under par with 13, while Yoshihara has 11. As far as rounds in the 60s go, Madey is first with eight, while Lai and Yoshihara are tied for second with seven.
The Bruins have totaled five Pac-12 Championships (2006, 2003, 1985, 1983, 1982), as well as six individual medalists, with the most recent one coming in '06 (Daniel Im).
