Men's Tennis Tops Waves for Eighth Straight Win
April 09, 2019 | Men's Tennis
LOS ANGELES โ The No. 13 UCLA men's tennis team put the non-conference portion of its schedule to bed Tuesday, defeating Pepperdine 4-1 at Los Angeles Tennis Center.
Freshman Eric Hahn posted the first clinching win of his young career, defeating Pawel Jankowiak 7-5, 6-1 on Court 6. Maxime Cressy and Govind Nanda also turned in straight-set victories for the Bruins (12-4), who won their seventh match in a row and 55th straight at LATC. Pepperdine (9-10) got its lone victory from Matias Sborowitz on Court 4.

Immediate breaks of serve on Courts 1 and 2 gave UCLA early momentum in doubles play. Bruins Nanda and Connor Rapp continued building their rapport on the middle court, jumping out to a 5-0 lead against Enrique Luque Rico and Corrado Summaria. The Wave duo captured three straight games, but it was too little too late, as Nanda-Rapp won 6-3. The victory marked the pair's third in a row.
Fourth-ranked Cressy and Keegan Smith kept rolling on the top court. In beating Adrian Oetzbach and Tim Zeitvogel of Pepperdine, the Bruins moved to 10-0 on the campaign. All of the pair's wins have come on Court 1. Cressy-Smith won 6-3 to give the Bruins the first point of the day. UCLA has now claimed seven consecutive doubles points.
The Bruins registered first-set wins on five of six singles courts to take another big step toward victory. Most noteworthy was the performance of No. 49 Nanda on Court 3, as the freshman blanked Pepperdine's Luque Rico. The Bruin freshman, who lost for the first time in eight completed matches Friday, turned in a 6-0, 6-3 victory to get back into his winning ways. He is now 15-4 overall and 12-3 in dual matches.
No. 21 Cressy also surrendered just three total games in his win, defeating Oetzbach in a 6-1, 6-2 top-court result that was sealed by an ace. Like Nanda, Cressy showed great resolve in bouncing back from a rare loss. He is now 9-3 on his senior campaign, which has just four regular-season matches remaining.
Playing on Court 4 for the first time since Feb. 23, Ben Goldberg came out strong against Sborowitz. With a 6-1 first-set win in his back pocket, however, the junior fell in the second. Trailing 0-3, Goldberg fought back to 4-5 before splitting sets. Sborowitz went on to win 6-3 in the third to get the Waves on the board.
In the lineup for the first time since recording the initial win of his dual-match career on Feb. 26, Hahn put a bow on the UCLA win. A back-and-forth first set culminated in the Fullerton, Calif. native taking the final three games from Jankowiak. The second set was all Hahn, who cruised through the frame for the deciding win.
In the midst of a six-match homestand, the Bruins return to Pac-12 action with Oregon and Washington next on the schedule. The Ducks will invade LATC Friday at 2 p.m. and the Huskies will check in Saturday at 2 p.m.
