BRUINS IN FAYETTEVILLE FOR NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP
The UCLA women's golf team begins its quest for a fourth NCAA Championship this weekend, beginning on Friday with the first of four rounds of stroke play at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.
This year marks the fifth year under the new format, which features four rounds of stroke play and three rounds of match play to determine the national champion. The 24-team field will face 18 holes of stroke play on both Friday (May 17), Saturday (May 18) and Sunday (May 19) before the field is trimmed to 15. Then on Monday, May 20, the top eight teams from those 15 will advance to the match play portion.
Play on Tuesday, May 21 will feature the match play quarterfinals in the morning and the semifinals in the afternoon, with the last two teams standing squaring off for the NCAA Championship on Wednesday afternoon (May 22).
GOLF CHANNEL TELEVISION COVERAGE
Golf Channel will have wall-to-wall coverage of the NCAA Championship, starting on Monday with the final round of stroke play at 3 p.m. CT/1 p.m. PT. On Tuesday, the Golf Channel will air the match play quarterfinals beginning at 10 a.m. CT/8 a.m. PT and the match play semifinals starting at 3 p.m. CT/1 p.m. PT. Full 18-hole coverage of the match play championship will begin at 3 p.m. CT/1 p.m. PT on Wednesday.

SEASON TEAM SUMMARY
UCLA has finished first, second or third in five of its 12 tournaments this season, posting wins at the Golfweek Conference Challenge (Sept. 24-26, -32, 832) and the Dual Match Versus Denver (March 26, E, 288), second-place finishes at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate presented by 3M (Sept. 17-19, -26, 838) and the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge (Feb. 3-5, +17, 869) and a third-place showing at the NCAA East Lansing Regional (May 6-8, +10, 874).
Due to sophomore Patty Tavatanakit and now-professional Lilia Vu going through the LPGA Q-Series, as well as Tavatanakit (ANA Inspiration) and junior Mariel Galdiano (Kia Classic) taking part in pro events as amateurs, the Bruins have fielded this starting five of Galdiano, Tavatanakit, senior Beth Wu, junior Clare Legaspi and freshman Phoebe Yue in just four tournaments (Bruin Wave Invitational, Darius Rucker Intercollegiate, Pac-12 Women's Golf Championship and NCAA East Lansing Regional).
UCLA finished a combined 58-under par in its first two tournaments of the season (ANNIKA and Golfweek Challenge), and has posted nine under-par rounds. Just two of the under-par rounds have occurred during the spring season, shooting a 2-under 286 in the final round of the PING/ASU Invitational and a 3-under 285 in the second round of the NCAA East Lansing Regional.
PATTY TAVATANAKIT
Sophomore Patty Tavatanakit, who is on the Watch List for the PING WGCA Division I Player of the Year and ANNIKA Awards, is coming off a second-straight, NCAA Regional title, shooting an 8-under 208 in East Lansing for her seventh career victory and third of the season (ANNIKA Intercollegiate, Dual Match Versus Denver). It marked the eighth win for a Bruin in NCAA Regional play (Bronte Law, 2016; Stephanie Kono, 2011; Maria Jose Uribe, 2008 and 2009; Sydnee Michaels, 2007; Hannah Jun, 2004).
The Pac-12 First Team honoree leads the Bruins with a 71.6 scoring average, having finished inside the Top 10 on six occasions. Including her victory at the NCAA Regional, she has tied for 22nd at the Pac-12 Championship and tied for 10th at the PING/ASU Invitational in her last three tournaments.
Tavatanakit has 11 under-par rounds, with seven of those being in the 60s, shooting a 9-under 63 in the final round of the ANNIKA. She shot a 13-under 203 in her three rounds at the ANNIKA and an 11-under 205 in her second-place finish at the Golfweek Conference Challenge. Tavatanakit also tied for fourth at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge.
Last season, Tavatanakit was the WGCA and Pac-12 Conference Freshman of the Year, as well as WGCA First Team All-American and All-Pac-12 First Team, as she tied a UCLA single-season record for victories with four, also setting a new freshman mark for wins in one season.
BETH WU
Senior Beth Wu holds a 73.4 scoring average, having also tallied two wins (Dual Match versus Denver, PING/ASU Invitational). She comes into the NCAA Championship with consecutive Top 20 showings, tying for 18th at the Pac-12 Women's Golf Championship (+7, 220) and tying for 11th at the NCAA East Lansing Regional (+2, 218).
Wu has three Top 10s on the season and eight Top 20s, tying for 10th at the Nanea Pac-12 Preview (-1, 218), tying for 15th at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate (-3, 213), tying for 16th at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge and tying for 18th at the Bruin Wave Invitational.
Her victory at ASU saw her finish at 7-under 209 thanks to a 6-under 66 and a 4-under 68 in her final two rounds. Wu has nine under-par rounds, with four of them being in the 60s. She opened the NCAA East Lansing Regional with a 2-under 70.
In her career, Wu has been named All-Pac-12 Conference Honorable Mention three times, while also being named WGCA Honorable Mention All-America as a freshman.
CLARE LEGASPI
Junior Clare Legaspi has a 74.0 scoring average, recording three Top 10s and five Top 20s. Her final round at Pac-12s, where she tied for 30th, saw her shoot a 1-under 70. Her seventh and most recent under-par round came in the second round of the NCAA East Lansing Regional, where she tallied a 2-under 70, as she tied for 27th overall.
Legaspi tied for third at the Dual Match Versus Denver (-1, 71), tied for fourth at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge (+3, 216) and tied for seventh at the Golfweek Conference Challenge (-3, 213).
She has recorded two rounds in the 60s, both in first rounds at the Golfweek Challenge and Stanford Intercollegiate. Legaspi tied for 18th at the Bruin Wave Invitational and tied for 20th at Stanford.
MARIEL GALDIANO
Junior Mariel Galdiano is on the next five list for the ANNIKA Award Watch List, as she was also named All-Pac-12 Conference First Team.
She is second on the team with a 72.3 scoring average, having posted two victories at the Golfweek Conference Challenge and the Stanford Intercollegiate, the first two wins of her career. Galdiano has four Top 10s and eight Top 20s, including a T-11 finish at the Silverado Showdown and a T-13 showing at Pac-12s prior to the NCAA Regional (T-53).
Galdiano has nine under-par rounds and four in the 60s. Her best round of the season was a 9-under 62 at Stanford. Galdiano, who is a combined 11-under in her second rounds this season, was a combined 23-under in her first three tournaments of the season. She tied for third at the Bruin Wave Invitational, tied for eighth at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, tied for 12th at the Nanea Pac-12 Preview and tied for 18th at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate.
Galdiano is coming off earning WGCA and Golfweek Second Team All-American awards last season, as well as a First Team All-Pac-12 honor.
PHOEBE YUE
Freshman Phoebe Yue has played in 10 tournaments, posting a scoring average of 78.9. Her best tournament of the season came at the Bruin Wave Invitational, where she tied for third. The final round of that tournament featured her best round of the season, a 1-over 73.
Yue was 40th at the Pac-12 Women's Golf Championship and tied for 82nd at the NCAA East Lansing Regional.
HISTORY AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
UCLA has won three NCAA Championships (2011 in Bryan, Texas; 2004 in Auburn, Ala.; 1991 in Columbus, Ohio). The last two triumphs have come under current head coach Carrie Forsyth, with the 1991 title hoisted under former coach Jackie Steinmann. The best finish for a UCLA player at the NCAA Championship came in 2008 when Tiffany Joh tied for first, however, she lost the individual title in a playoff. The Bruins also have a trio of third-place individual finishes (1996, Kathy Choi; Susie Mathews, 2004; Amie Cochran, 2005, T-3).
Last season in Stillwater, Okla., the Bruins tied for first with Alabama in stroke play (+9, 1,161) to earn the top seed for match play. Galdiano tied for seventh (-1, 287), Tavatanakit (+3, 291) tied for 19th, Wu tied for 38th and Legaspi tied for 60th. UCLA would fall, 3-2, in the NCAA Match Play Quarterfinals to eventual national champion Arizona. Two years prior in Eugene, Ore., UCLA finished first in stroke play (-8, 1,144), won the quarters against Oregon, but fell again to the eventual national champion Washington in the semifinals.
In their 25 previous trips to the NCAA Championships, the Bruins have finished the stroke play portion in the Top 8 on 20 occasions (1st - 5 times; 2nd - 4 times; 3rd - 2 times; 4th - 2 times; 5th - 4 times; 6th - 2 times; 8th - 1 time).
