Swim and Dive Treks North for Meet at Washington State

January 09, 2020 | Swimming & Diving

The UCLA swim and dive team will continue its season this weekend with a road trip to Pullman, Wash., taking on Washington State on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 11:00 a.m.

The dual meet will be the Bruins' (6-0, 3-0) first Pac-12 competition since sweeping the Arizona schools over the first two days of November. Saturday's showdown will be live streamed by the Cougars and can be accessed HERE.

Washington State enters the weekend with a 3-3 overall record and a 0-2 mark in league competition. The Cougars will host USC on Friday night before welcoming the Bruins on Saturday.

After a month-plus layoff, UCLA didn't miss a beat in last week's return to action, soundly defeating UC San Diego on the road, 182-79.

The Bruins captured wins in 11 of 12 events in the swim-only meet, receiving victories from 10 different swimmers. Freshmen Stephanie Su (10:11.34, 1000 free) and Sophia Kosturos (54.80, 100 back) both set pool records at the Canyonview Aquatics Center. Sophomore Claire Grover was able to pick up multiple event wins, taking home the title in both the 50 free (22.99) and 200 breast (2:18.16).

UCLA carries an 11-1 all-time record against Washington State in dual meets, with the lone loss coming during the 2016-17 campaign.

The Bruins emerged victorious, 152-104, on Oct. 28, 2017 in the last meeting between the two schools. UCLA also defeated Arkansas (162.5-131.5) and UC Davis (207-87) as part of a home-opening quad meet. UCLA captured 10 of 14 overall wins in that meet, featuring multiple events wins from current senior Kenisha Liu and the since-graduated Katie Grover, Emma Schanz, and Sandra Soe.

UCLA divers will not be competing this weekend. However, the group is ramping up for next weekend's Bruin Diving Invitational at Spieker Aquatics Center. Junior Ruby Neave has been one of the league's top competitors so far this year, taking home the Pac-12 Diver of the Month Award for November, while she and junior Alice Yanovsky have both qualified for the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships. The group is rounded out by promising underclassmen in sophomore Veronica Thompson and freshmen Hannah Butler and Katie Shaheen.
