CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The top-ranked Bruins improved to 15-0 on the season on Sunday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, defeating Auburn, 11-1 in five innings. In its second game of the day, an exhibition contest against the USA Olympic Team, UCLA became the first opposing team to hold a lead on the Stand Beside Her Tour before eventually falling 9-3.
In game one against Auburn (9-7), the Bruins had 10 hits from seven different players, as senior Jacqui Prober and freshman Maya Brady each had two hits and three RBI, while junior Kinsley Washington also posted two hits. Junior Holly Azevedo struck out three in a complete-game victory to move to 5-0 on the season. She allowed six hits, a run and no walks in five innings. Azevedo had a 1-2-3 inning in the fourth.
UCLA scored four times in the bottom of the first. Washington reached on an error, stole second, moved to third on a grounder by junior Briana Perez and scored one out later on a single to left-center by Brady. Walks to junior Delanie Wisz and freshman Alyssa Garcia loaded the bases for Prober, who emptied them with a double to left-center to put the Bruins up by four.
The Bruins added four more to their total in the second. With one out, sophomore Kelli Godin reached on an infield single, stole second and moved to third on a Washington infield hit. Washington then stole second, and one out later, both runners came home on a double to right by redshirt junior Aaliyah Jordan to make it 6-0. Brady followed with a homer to right, her sixth of the season, to increase the lead to 8-0.
After the Tigers got on the board in the top of the third, the Bruins tacked on three more in the bottom half of the inning. With one out, successive singles by Prober, freshman Seneca Curo and junior Julie Rodriguez made it 9-1. A Washington single to right plated Curo to bring the lead to 10-1, while a Perez sacrifice fly scored Rodriguez to put UCLA up by 10.
Against USA, the Bruins fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first before UCLA scored three times in the bottom half. Washington led off with an infield single and scored on a Perez double to left-center to even the score. One out later, Brady went to the opposite field just inside the left-field pole for a home run to put the Bruins up 3-1, as UCLA became the first opposing team on USA's Stand Beside Her Tour to take a lead.
USA would score one in the fifth, five in the sixth and two in the seventh to take command, but there were still a couple of highlights for the Bruins in the seventh, as Rodriguez came in to pitch for the first time in her collegiate career and retired the only batter she faced on a pop up. Then in the bottom of the seventh, she roped a base hit up the middle off Monica Abbott.
The Bruins are back in action on Thursday at Easton Stadium, hosting No. 4 Texas at 6 p.m. Free live video streaming will be available at UCLABruins.com.
