No. 1 Bruins Survive and Sweep Saturday Doubleheader

SAN DIEGO - Junior Briana Perez drove in six runs in Saturday's doubleheader, while sophomore Megan Faraimo picked up both wins, striking out 24 in 10 2/3 scoreless innings of relief, as No. 1 UCLA defeated Weber State, 10-5, and San Diego State, 5-0.
In game one versus Weber State (6-13), the Bruins (17-1) had 11 hits from seven different players, as Perez, juniors Aaliyah Jordan and Kinsley Washington and freshman Alyssa Garcia all had two-hit contests. Faraimo (10-1) struck out 15 in seven innings, allowing just one hit. She fanned the side in the first and fifth and two apiece in the second, third, sixth and seventh.
It took just six pitches for UCLA to take a lead, as Washington led off with a triple to left-center and Perez drove her in on a sacrifice fly to center.
The Wildcats scored five in their half of the first to go up by four, but the Bruins rallied with nine unanswered runs. In the second, freshman Seneca Curo was at second base with two outs after reaching on a fielder's choice and swiping a bag. Washington then tapped a ball back to the circle, and when the Weber State first baseman committed an error, Curo came home to make it 5-2.
UCLA re-took the lead in the third. Freshman Maya Brady and junior Delanie Wisz each singled and both scored on a one-out double by Garcia to get the Bruins to within one. With sophomore Anna Vines running for Garcia, freshman Taylor Edwards drew a walk, both runners moved up on a sacrifice by sophomore Kelli Godin and a free pass to Washington loaded the bases. Perez then singled to center to bring in Vines and Edwards to put the Bruins up by one.
The Bruins scored four more times in the seventh. Senior Jacqui Prober led off with a single to right and scored on a Garcia triple to left-center to make it 7-5. Edwards then tapped a ball to second, but it was misplayed, as Garcia came home to bring the lead to 8-5. Godin drew a one-out walk, stole second, and one out later, scored on a double to left-center by Perez, with a single to right by Jordan plating Perez with the Bruins' 10th run.
In game two, UCLA (18-1) had 10 hits from seven different players, as Brady, Godin and Perez all had two hits. Faraimo (11-1) struck out nine in 3 2/3 innings of shutout relief, giving up two hits. She fanned the side in the fifth and seventh and two in the sixth. Junior Holly Azevedo struck out two in 3 1/3 innings, giving up just a bunt single.
UCLA and San Diego State (13-8) were scoreless until the top of the seventh. Garcia led off with a single to right-center, with Vines coming in to run. Curo moved Vines to second on a sacrifice and a Godin bunt hit put Vines at third. Godin stole second, and one out later, she scored along with Vines on a two-run single by Perez. Following a Jordan infield single, Brady hit a three-run homer to center, her seventh of the season, to make it 5-0.
The Bruins close out the San Diego Classic on Sunday at 2 p.m. at San Diego on the campus of USD.
