LOS ANGELES - In game one of Saturday's doubleheader, sophomore Megan Faraimo set a new career high with 14 strikeouts, while in game two, redshirtย junior Aaliyah Jordan went 3-for-3, with freshman Maya Brady homering in both ends of the twinbill, as the fourth-ranked Bruins defeated Pittsburgh, 4-0, and CSU Bakersfield, 8-4, at Easton Stadium.
Faraimo (2-0) was dominant in the opener against the Panthers (2-2), allowing just five hits in a complete-game shutout. Thanks to a dropped third strike, Faraimo had a four-strikeout inning in the fourth. She also struck out a pair apiece in the third, fifth, sixth and seventh frames.ย
The Bruins (3-0) needed just three hits to get the win, with two of them coming on two-run homers. In the first, Jordan drew a walk and Brady sent her second home run of the season to right to put UCLA on the board. In the fifth, Faraimo drew a one-out walk and came home on freshman Seneca Curo's first homer of her career, a shot to left-center, to make it 4-0.
In the nightcap versus the Roadrunners (0-4), the Bruins (4-0) recorded nine hits from six different players. In addition to Jordan's three-hit performance, junior Delanie Wisz had two hits. In the circle, freshman Lexi Sosa picked up the win in her first collegiate start, striking out two in five innings and allowing four runs and seven hits. Junior Holly Azevedo threw two shutout innings of relief, fanning four and giving up two hits and a walk.ย
In the first, the Bruins scored three times. With junior Briana Perez at third after reaching on a fielder's choice and moving up a couple of bases on a steal and a passed ball, Jordan singled up the middle to put UCLA on the board. After Brady reached on an error, Curo produced a two-out double to right to bring in Jordan and Brady to make it 3-0.
In the third, Perez was hit by a pitch to open the inning, stole second and scored again on a Jordan single. After Jordan was forced at second with Brady at the plate, Brady stole second and scored on a single up the middle by Wisz to make it 5-0.
CSU Bakersfield closed to within one following a two-run single in the fourth and a two-run homer in the fifth, but Brady gave the Bruins some cushion in the bottom of the fifth. Perez reached on a bunt single to open the frame, Jordan walked and both came home on a Brady homer to right, her third of the season, to make it 8-4.
The Bruins conclude the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament with another doubleheader on Sunday, taking on Pittsburgh at 9 a.m. and San Diego at 11:30 a.m. Both games will feature free live audio on UCLABruins.com.
