UCLA Finishes Fourth at The Match in the Desert

GOLD CANYON, Ariz. – Freshman Caroline Canales led the No. 12 UCLA women's golf team with the first top-10 finish of her career after posting a 1-under 143 through two rounds at The Match in the Desert on Monday. As a team, the Bruins placed fourth at 1-over 577 and 19 strokes behind tournament champion No. 20 Arizona State.
Reigning National Champion No. 24 Ole Miss and runner-up No. 2 Oklahoma State were the two other schools to place ahead of UCLA at 13-under and 2-under, respectively.
The Bruins' three other counting scores all placed within the top 20: junior Emilie Paltrinieri tied for 15th and junior Emma Spitz and freshman Zoe Antoinette Campos tied for 17th.
Oklahoma State's Maddison Hinson-Tolchard took the individual title with a 10-under 134 performance, posting scores of 5-under 67 on both days.
Canales – who shot a 2-under 70 on Sunday – fell back three spots to tie for 10th after recording a 1-over 73. Canales parred 15 of her 18 holes and birdied the par-4 18th.
Paltrinieri recorded both UCLA's lowest score of the day and her lowest of the season through three tournaments with a 1-under 71 to shoot up nine spots on the individual leaderboard. Paltrinieri birdied four times on the par-5 second, par-3 eighth, par-5 10th and par-3 15th.
Spitz also jumped seven spots in the standings with her even-par 72 performance. Spitz parred 16 of her 18 holes and birdied the par-5 14th.
Campos repeated her 1-over 73 score from day one, holing one birdie on the par-5 fifth and bogeying twice.
Freshman Alessia Nobilio dropped out of the top 10 to tie for 23rd after shooting 4-over 76. Nobilio birdied twice on the par-5 fifth and par-5 10th.
Senior Simar Singh, who competed individually, scored 15-over 87 in her second round to finish the tournament at 26-over 170.
The Bruins return to action Feb. 14 and 15 to compete at the Lamkin Invitational at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
