UCLA Falls to LMU, 1-0

October 14, 2023 | Men's Soccer

LOS ANGELES – The No. 24-ranked UCLA men's soccer team was unable to overcome an early goal by Loyola Marymount, losing 1-0 to the visiting Lions.

LMU's goal at the 2:37 mark, a header by Lewis Clutton off a corner kick, held as the only score of the game despite 12 Bruin shots and a relentless attack in the final 20 minutes of the contest.

The Bruin defense also held strong for the majority of the game, with goalkeeper Wyatt Nelson recording three saves in an eventful first half. Nelson made a big save on Smalls' shot in transition in the 14th minute, and defender Pietro Grassi made a second stop on the rebound, clearing Ryan Kingsford's shot off the line. UCLA's defense came through again in the 25th minute, with Nelson saving another Smalls shot and Tarun Karumanchi blocking Kingsford's follow-up. The Lions (6-1-5) maintained possession and got off a third shot, by Clutton, that Nelson tipped over the bar.

Sean Karani had the Bruins' best chance of the first half in the 43rd minute, smashing a long-distance shot that was swatted by Lion goalkeeper Massimo Pomponi.

The second half was dominated by the Bruins, who outshot the Lions by a 9-2 count in the second stanza and 12-8 overall. Tucker Lepley had a good look on a long-distance shot in the 56th minute, but his curling drive went high. A minute later, Tommy Silva sent a ball into the box that came close to finding Jack Sarkos but was instead pushed out by Pomponi.
Karani nearly tied the game in the 72nd minute after a quick throw-in reached Ryan Becher in the box. Becher flicked it to Karani, but his shot hit the side netting. Jose Contell had a shot saved in the 76th minute, and Karani's header off a corner kick was saved in the 79th minute. UCLA had one last-ditch attempt to tie in the final 30 seconds of the game but was unable to connect on the service in the box.

"It's hard when you have to chase a game, and we put ourselves in that situation, so we'll take responsibility for that, and we'll take responsibility for the fact that we didn't take the chances that we created," said UCLA head coach Ryan Jorden. "I've got a very honest team, they understand both of those things, so at the end of it, you feel good about your group, we know what we're capable of, we ran the game for the most part, it's a significant outshooting of the opponent. You have to take the chances. So that's what tonight was. We lost 1-0 in a game we probably shouldn't."

The Bruins (5-3-3) will resume Pac-12 play on Friday, Oct. 20 at 7pm with a home game against San Diego State.
