Bruins Lose to No. 4 Washington State, 3-1

October 22, 2023 | Women's Volleyball

LOS ANGELES โ€“ Grayce Olson led the UCLA women's volleyball team with a career-high 17 kills and a .438 hitting percentage in its four-set loss against No. 4 Washington State at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom Sunday afternoon.
ย
Set scores were 22-25, 28-26, 10-25 and 20-25.
ย
The Bruins (11-9, 3-7) won a contentious second set in extra points, 28-26, but fell in the remaining three with an overall hitting percentage of .191. Outside hitter Iman Ndiaye finished the match with nine kills tied a career high with 12 digs. On the other side of the net, the Cougars (18-3, 8-2) hit for a .272 rate while dealing 10 service aces compared to UCLA's one.
ย
Washington State had three players finish in double-digit kills. Pia Timmer scored a match-high 22.5 points off 19 kills (.313%) and three service aces. Middle blocker Magda Jelárová added 18.0 points on 14 kills (.545%) and seven blocks.
ย
The Bruins got off to slow starts in set one and two. In the first, Washington State opened the match on a 5-1 scoring run. UCLA improvised on several out-of-system plays to record kills and eventually even the game at 11-11. Highlighting that 4-0 stretch for the Bruins was a bump back set by a sprinting Peyton Dueck who nearly collided with the press row.
ย
UCLA was up three points with five to play at 20-17 when Washington State went on an 8-2 run to steal the opening stanza. Those points came by way of two blocks and two kills from middle blocker Katy Ryan.
ย
The Cougars took their momentum into set two with an early 6-2 advantage. Pia Timmer recorded two aces before forcing UCLA head coach Alfee Reft to call a timeout. Immediately, Ndiaye sided out on a kill to spark a 5-1 UCLA spurt to bring the Bruins within one, 8-7. A Cougar block on the next play brought Iman Iman Isanovic to the service line who proceeded to go on 6-0 run to double up the lead, 14-7.
ย
Two quick kills from Olson and Becker helped to begin the Bruins' comeback. Back-to-back blocks by Becker and a kill by Ndiaye allowed UCLA to regain their standing and bring the team within two, 18-16. A kill from Dodson on an assist from Audrey Pak denied Washington State of set point, and one play later, Pak took matters into her own hands with a dump kill for set point.
ย
UCLA hit -.071 as a team with just four kills in the third set while Washington State put up 17 kills at .368. Timmer was responsible for 10 of those kills.
ย
A kill by Grayce Olson kept the Bruins within striking distance in set four at 14-12. The final set was defined by more elite hitting on the Cougar side of the ball. Olson had six kills in the final frame and Ndiaye recorded UCLA's only serving ace of the match. The Bruins held off Washington State late in the set, forcing five match points, but ended up losing the match on a kill from Jehlárová.
ย
UCLA will be on the road next week to take on Utah and Colorado. The Bruins face off against the Utes on Friday, Oct. 27th at 6 p.m. (PT) on Pac-12 Insider.
