UCLA Downs Utes with Explosive Final Three Sets

October 27, 2023 | Women's Volleyball

SALT LAKE CITY โ€“ The UCLA women's volleyball team hit for a collective .363 rate to defeat Utah in four sets at the Jon M. Huntsman Center Friday night. With the victory, the Bruins (12-9, 4-7) even the season series versus the Utes (9-12, 4-7).
ย
Set scores were 20-25, 25-18, 25-22 and 25-13.
ย
The .363 hitting percentage was UCLA's third highest mark of the season and second of highest of Pac-12 Conference play. The Bruins hit .364 two matches ago versus Washington on Oct. 20.
ย
UCLA corrected its slow start from its set one loss, jumping out to insurmountable leads in the beginning of the remaining three sets to cruise to victory.
ย
Senior outside hitter Iman Ndiaye scored a match-high 15.0 points on 13 kills (.345%) and four block assists. Anna Dodson set a new career high in block assists with nine. Setter Audrey Pak filled up the stat sheet with a career-high 44 assists, six block assists, three digs and two dump kills.
ย
Pak highlighted the beginning of what was a brilliant UCLA serving stretch in set four. She opened a 4-0 run at the service line with an ace early on to help the Bruins break out to an 8-4 lead. Leverette continued on that theme with a 4-0 run of her own which featured her third service ace of the night.
ย
UCLA needed 13 kills at a blistering .545 clip to dispose of Utah in that match-deciding set. The Bruins sided out on 85 percent of the Utes' serve in the frame and held the Utah offense in the negative with just seven kills and nine attacking errors. Perhaps the most impressive swing of set four was on a "2 set" by Pak to Dodson who powered a kill through the upper body of the Utah libero at the 12-8 mark.
ย
The Bruins opened set three on an 11-2 run with kills coming on seven of those points, including four straight by Leverette from the 6-2 to 9-2 mark. Leverette totaled seven kills at a .333 hitting percentage in the frame. Utah would stay in contention by trimming the deficit to just one at the 19-18 mark. However, a kill by Ndiaye, a block from Pak and Desiree Becker and another kill by Grayce Olson gave UCLA a four-point lead with just three more points to play.
ย
Ndiaye leads UCLA with 3.00 kills per set this season.
ย
Olson and Becker tallied four of the Bruins' early points in the second set with a block assist and three kills between them to make it 7-3. Two aces from Carly Hendrickson gave UCLA a 12-5 advantage, and two blocks down the stretch which Dodson and Pak each assisted on erased all hope of a Utah comeback, going up 24-17.
ย
UCLA closes the week six of Pac-12 play at Colorado on Sunday, Oct. 29 at 1 p.m. (PT) in the CU Events Center. The match can be streamed on Pac-12 Insider.
