Bruins Take Down Huskies, 3-1, to Finish Week 2-0

November 12, 2023 | Women's Volleyball

SEATTLE โ€“ Cheridyn Leverette paced the UCLA women's volleyball team with 16 kills at a .355 hitting percentage in a 3-1 victory over Washington at Alaska Airlines Arena Sunday afternoon.
ย
Set scores were 25-23, 25-17, 22-25 and 25-20.
ย
With the win, the Bruins (16-10, 8-8) reach a .500 winning percentage in Pac-12 Conference play and have now won five of their last six matches. After defeating both No. 9 Washington State and Washington this week, UCLA has swept its Evergreen State road trip for the first time in 20 years.
ย
Middle blocker Anna Dodson matched Leverette with 18.0 points deriving from 13 kills with just one error for a .545 clip, six blocks and two service aces. Pak, who had a double-double at Washington State on Friday, put up 46 assists, four blocks and six digsย against the Huskies (14-13, 5-11).
ย
UCLA totaled 52 kills for a .254 hitting percentage while limiting Washington to 49 at .148. The Bruins' two-highest service ace totals of the season have now come in back-to-back matches with 11 today and 13 at Washington State. Sophomore Mokihana Tufono led the team with four aces while Dodson and Iman Ndiaye each recorded two.
ย
The Bruins trailed 22-20 in set one when UCLA head coach Alfee Reft called a timeout. A Huskies attacking error and service error helped trim the deficit to one point, 23-22. Leverette and Desire Becker teamed up for a block that bounced past the 10-foot line and into the backrow to even the set, 23-23. Tufono's first service ace of the match put UCLA's first set point at the line. On the next play, Tufono prevented the Washington block on a Leverette tip shot from hitting the deck with a dig while squatting on her heels. The Aiea, Hawaii native rolled out of the way for Pak who once again set Leverette. This time, Leverette delivered with a precise, cross-court shot that found the back corner to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead.
ย
Ndiaye put together a 6-0 run at the service line with two aces to provide a 6-1 cushion at the beginning of set two. Leverette had a kill and block in that stretch. Dodson picked up her fourth kill and fourth block of the match on back-to-back plays to stretch UCLA's lead to 8-2. An overpass by Grayce Olson set up what seemingly was an easy kill for 6-foot, 4-inch middle blocker Elise Hani, but Pak went up and denied her with her second solo block of the set to force a Washington timeout at 18-12. Tufono concluded the second-set victory with the Bruins' fourth service ace of the stanza.
ย
UCLA had just one attacking error in the frame.
ย
Pak went to Leverette late in set three to keep the possibility of a sweep alive. Leverette smashed two kills to trim the Huskies' lead to 21-20 and 22-21. A serving error by Leverette and a Washington ace on the following two plays brought set point for the Huskies. Dodson's first and only attacking error of the match came on the next play with her swing going long.
ย
A 6-1 run with three kills by Ndiaye, two from Dodson and one from Leverette supplied the Bruins a 17-15 lead midway through set four and forced a Washington timeout. Leverette came out of the break with two straight kills to provide UCLA a four-point buffer with six to play at 19-15. For the second time today, Tufono served up the finisher, this time an ace for match point.
ย
UCLA returns to Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom next week for two matches versus No. 4 Stanford and California. The Bruins will face the Cardinal Friday, Nov 17 at 7 p.m. (PT) on Pac-12 Los Angeles.
ย
UCLA will be honoring its seniors versus California on Sunday, Nov. 19 at 12 p.m.
