LOS ANGELES โ The UCLA women's volleyball team dropped a hard-fought match to No. 2 Stanford, 3-2, at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom Friday evening.
ย
Set scores were 25-23, 11-25, 23-25, 29-27 and 7-15.
ย
Iman Ndiaye led the team with 16 kills and 12 digs in her fifth double-double of the season. Sophomores Grayce Olson and Cheridyn Leverette joined Ndiaye in double-figure kills with 12 apiece. Setter Audrey Pak recorded 42 assists and picked up the 1,000th assist of her career.
ย
Kendall Kipp scored a match-high 24.5 points off 21 kills at a .409 hitting percentage and five blocks. Stanford totaled 68 kills as a team at a .340 rate.
ย
The Bruins (16-11, 8-9) kept the contest alive in an exciting fourth set. On the Cardinal's (23-3,16-1) first of four match points at 24-21, the Bruins rallied with two consecutive kills by Cheridyn Leverette followed by a block from Anna Dodson and Iman Ndiaye to even the set at 24-all. The two squads exchanged points until outside hitter Grayce Olson put away back-to-back kills to force a fifth, 29-27.
ย
The first of the two UCLA comebacks in the fourth set was sparked by setter Audrey Pak at the service line. With the Bruins trailing 12-6, Olson tallied three straight points on two kills and a block assist. A kill by Ndiaye evened the set at 12-12.
ย
UCLA was scoreless when it switched sides in the fifth set with Stanford up, 8-0. The Cardinal closed out final frame with nine error-free kills on 17 swings.
ย
Mokihana Tufono gave the Bruins an early lead in the first set with two of her team-high four aces, 10-8. It was the second match in a row Tufono recorded four service aces. Two service aces by Elia Rubin put the lead back in the hands of Stanford and forced head coach Alfee Reft to call a timeout. Out of the break, Ndiaye notched a big sideout kill, making the score 18-17. Leverette dunked an overpass for a kill to provide UCLA a two-point buffer at 22-20. The Bruins closed the first set on an intense rally concluded on a kill by Ndiaye assisted by Pak.
ย
Two four-point Stanford scoring runs put UCLA in an insurmountable hole in set two. The Bruins were limited to seven kills and hit seven attacking errors in the frame, while the Cardinal bashed for 15 kills at a .483 clip.
ย
A dump kill by Pak and attacking error by Stanford put UCLA up 23-22 with two points to go in the all-important third set. However, a 3-0 Cardinal run with a kill by Rubin, Stanford block and an ace by Kipp sealed the set.
