Vines, Godin Shine in 10-2 Mercy-Rule Win Over Washington

March 19, 2023 | Softball

LOS ANGELES – The No. 3 UCLA softball team scored a run in every inning to defeat No. 10 Washington, 10-2, in a mercy-rule decision at Easton Stadium on Sunday.

Redshirt junior Maya Brady notched the fifth multi-homer game of her career and her third of the season with two home runs today. Brady, who now leads the team with a .467 batting average, 10 home runs and 35 runs batted in on the year, finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBI.

Brady is the only player among the Power 5 conferences to have at least a .450 average, 10 homers and 35 runs batted in.

With the win, the Bruins (27-3, 4-2 Pac-12) take their second Pac-12 series to open the conference schedule. UCLA totaled 14 hits, including six from the bottom of its lineup. The Bruins' No. 8 and No. 9 hitters, Anna Vines and Kelli Godin, went a combined 6-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBI.

Godin's final hit of the day was a walk-off, RBI single over the head of Huskies (22-6, 3-3 Pac-12) left fielder Sami Reynolds to bring home Rachel Cid.

In the circle, Megan Faraimo entered in relief in the second inning and provided 4.2 innings of shutout ball to earn her 13th win of the season. Faraimo allowed a triple to the very first batter she faced in Brooklyn Carter, but did not allow another runner to reach scoring position for the rest of her outing. She finished with three strikeouts.

UCLA and Washington traded homers for the first five runs of the game. Brady and Megan Grant both hit solo shots in the first and second innings for the Bruins while Kelley Lynch and Sydney Stewart each left the yard in the second. Brady followed up with another home run in her next at-bat in the third inning to recapture the lead for the Bruins.

Back-to-back base hits by Vines and Godin in the fourth inning kicked the Bruins' offense into gear once more. Savannah Pola singled through the right side to plate Vines and push UCLA's lead to 4-2.

The Bruins put up a five spot in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach. UCLA's 6 through 9 hitters drew two hit-by-pitches and two walks to score another run and bring the top of the order up with the bases loaded. For the second time, Pola came through with a single that scored two. Brady hit a rocket up the middle for her third RBI base hit of the day.

And in the sixth, it was the bottom of the order that came through. With two outs, Cid singled to right field to begin the rally. A hit-by-pitch taken by Lauryn Carter and Vines' third hit of the day loaded the bases for Godin who walked it off.

Vines and Godin tied career highs with three hits apiece.

UCLA heads to Eugene, Ore. next week to play a three-game series against Oregon at Jane Sanders Stadium. Game one of Friday, March 24, is scheduled for 6 p.m. (PT). Each contest will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
