No. 2 Bruins Slug for Three Homers in 8-0 Shutout of Arizona

April 15, 2023 | Softball

TUCSON, Ariz. – The No. 2 UCLA softball team homered three times in an 8-0 shutout victory over No. 24 Arizona at Hillenbrand Stadium on Friday.

Freshman Kennedy Powell's first home run of her career, a three-run shot in the second inning, gave the Bruins (37-4, 13-3) all the run support they would need.

UCLA has shutout the Wildcats in four consecutive contests for the first time since the 1984-85 seasons. Redshirt senior Megan Faraimo struck out six batters across 6.0 scoreless innings in her start, earning her 20th win on the season (20-2).

Faraimo now leads the Pac-12 in wins (20), strikeouts (175) and earned run average (1.04), with a minimum of 60 innings pitched. She is riding a 31.0 scoreless innings streak which is one inning shy of tying her career-long streak of 32.0, spanning across the 2021-22 seasons.

Also leaving the yard were Maya Brady and Aaliyah Jordan. Brady's team-leading 13th home run of the year came with Megan Grant on base in the third inning. It was her third longball in her five career games at Hillenbrand Stadium. Brady overtook Arizona's Olivia DiNardo for the Pac-12 lead in batting average, posting a .441 mark over UCLA's 41 games this season.

Jordan's blast came in the fifth inning on a 2-2 changeup that was left up in the zone. The seventh-year designated player deposited the ball over the right field fence for her third homer in her 11th game back to the UCLA lineup.

Jordan ended her three-RBI night with a two-run single into right field in the top of the seventh inning to score Brady and pinch runner Lauren Hatch.

Arizona freshman pitcher Aissa Silva was dealt her second loss of the season.

The Wildcats left a total of 10 runners on base and came close to spoiling Faraimo's scoreless streak in the third and sixth innings before leaving two pairs of runners on second and third base. Arizona threatened again in the seventh, loading the bases with no outs against UCLA reliever Lauren Shaw.

The crafty left-hander was able to work out of the jam despite facing the heart of the Wildcats' lineup. Shaw got DiNardo, who leads the conference in batting average, to pop out to shortstop. Next, Shaw came back from a 3-0 count against Allie Skaggs, the Pac-12 RBI leader, to strike her out looking. And to end the game, Shaw recorded another called strike three against No. 4 hitter Devyn Netz.

UCLA totaled nine hits in the game. Anna Vines went 2-for-3 and has now hit safely in three straight games. Over the Bruins' last nine games, UCLA's seven, eight and nine hitters in the lineup are hitting for a collective .333 batting average (22-for-66) and .424 on-base percentage (seven walks).

The Bruins look to secure their fifth Pac-12 series victory tomorrow when they take on Arizona at 1 p.m. (PT) at Hillenbrand Stadium. The contest can be watched on the Pac-12 Network with Tracy Warren and Kenzie Fowler on the call.
