No. 2 Bruins Mercy-Rule Sun Devils, 9-1, to Take Series
April 23, 2023 | Softball
LOS ANGELES โ The No. 2 UCLA softball team defeated Arizona State, 9-1, in mercy-rule fashion in six innings at Easton Stadium on Saturday night.
ย
Megan Grant went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in and Jordan Woolery hit her 10th home run of the year on a solo shot in the sixth inning.
ย
The Bruins (42-4, 17-3) totaled 11 hits in the game. UCLA starting pitcher Brooke Yanez earned her 12th win of the season. The left-hander struck out six batters and allowed one earned run on four hits along the way.
ย
Maya Brady kickstarted the Bruin offense in the first inning with her third triple of the season which landed in front of a diving Makenna Harper in left field. Aaliyah Jordan brought Brady home one batter later to put UCLA on the board. The Bruins tallied one more run before the inning came to an end on a sacrifice fly by Sharlize Palacios.
ย
UCLA is now 24-0 when scoring in the first inning this season.
ย
There were a combined seven errors between the two teams, including four for UCLA and three for Arizona State (21-19, 5-12). The first of several zany plays came in the top of the second inning. On a ground ball hit to third baseman Megan Grant with the bases loaded, Arizona State's runner on second, Gianna Boccagno, trampled shortstop Maya Brady in a play that was later overturned and ruled runner's interference. Yanez would get out of the inning unscathed.
ย
Grant responded from her error in the top half with an RBI single to stretch the Bruins' lead to 3-0. After tonight, Grant leads the team and ranks second among freshmen in the country with 53 runs batted in.
ย
Another UCLA defensive miscue in the fourth played into the Bruins' favor. Anna Vines, who had a fielding error the previous play, dropped a softly-hit line drive which she was able to turn into a 4-5-6 double play to end the inning.
ย
In the bottom half, Grant added to her RBI total with a double to the right field corner to score Anna Vines. Anna Vines finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Janelle Meoño, who put Vines in scoring position, also was 2-for-3.

ย
More chaos ensued in the fourth when Brady hit a ground ball to first baseman Jordan VanHook who chased Meoño down in a pickle between third and home. The Arizona State catcher could have tagged Meoño out at third base which was already occupied by an advancing Megan Grant. But instead, her errant throw tipped off the third baseman's mitt into the outfield, allowing Meoño to scamper home.
ย
One more Bruins' run came across in the fourth on a ball that Aaliyah Jordan hit which went straight through the legs of Sun Devil second baseman Jazmyn Rollin to make it 7-0.
ย
VanHook knocked in Arizona State's only run of the game in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly to plate Rollin.
ย
After Woolery's solo bomb in the sixth, Vines drew a walk with the bases loaded to end the game.
ย
UCLA closes the series against Arizona State on Senior Day tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. (PT) at Easton Stadium. The game will be televised by the Pac-12 Network with Anne Marie Anderson and UCLA Athletic Hall of Famer Natasha Watley on the call.
