LA JOLLA, Calif. โ The No. 3 UCLA softball team collected 10 hits, including three for extra-bases, in a 10-1 mercy-rule victory over UC San Diego at Triton Softball Field on Tuesday.
ย
Fifth-year infielder Rachel Cid went 2-for-3 with three runs batted and a double to lead the Bruins (33-4, 9-3). Savannah Pola recorded UCLA's other multi-RBI performance, driving in two runs with her second triple of the season in the fourth inning.
ย
Lauryn Carter continued her hot streak at the plate with her seventh RBI over her last six games. Carter put the Bruins ahead for good with an RBI single to left field in the fourth inning.
ย
In the circle, Brooke Yanez turned out 5.0 solid innings with four strikeouts to pick up her 10th win of the season.
ย
UCLA got on the board first in the top of the third. Kennedy Powell walked to lead off the inning and stole second base to put herself into scoring position. Freshman Megan Grant brought Powell home with a single to right field off the 10th pitch of her at-bat and after fouling off four straight pitches. Grant ranks second on the team and leads all freshmen in the Pac-12 with 37 runs batted in this season.
ย
The Tritons (14-20) evened the game in the bottom half thanks to an RBI double by second baseman Marissa Hassis. UC San Diego's Shelby Thompson earned the loss and gave up seven runs, six of which were unearned.
ย
The Bruins broke the game open with a six-run fifth inning that included four hits and three errors by the Tritons' defense. After Carter's RBI single to plate Lauren Hatch, the Inglewood, Calif. native caused chaos on the basepaths in a delayed steal attempt that resulted in UC San Diego's second baseman airmailing a ball into the outfield during a rundown, allowing Rylee Pinedo to scamper homer.
ย
Another run scored after left fielder Alexa Demarse dropped Grant's fly ball at the warning track with the bases loaded to make it 4-1. Pola and Jordan Woolery stepped to the plate next and slammed a pair of balls into the right-center gap for a triple and double, respectively, putting an end to the scoring at 7-1.
ย
Cid knocked in UCLA's final runs of the game with her second double of the season in the fifth and a two-RBI single in the sixth.
ย
Janelle Meoño, Sharlize Palacios, Alexis Ramirez and Powell also ended up in the hit column.
ย
Freshman Taylor Tinsley shut the door in the bottom of the sixth with two strikeouts in a three-up, three-down inning to end the game.
ย
UCLA returns home this Thursday to open a three-game series versus Oregon State at Easton Stadium. The contest will begin at 5 p.m. (PT) and will be televised on the Pac-12 Network with Tracy Warren on the call.
