UCLA Sweeps Northwestern State to Conclude Road Trip
August 28, 2023 | Women's Volleyball
NATCHITOCHES, La. – Four Bruins reached double-figure kills as the UCLA women's volleyball team concluded its Louisiana road trip with a 3-0 sweep of Northwestern State in Prather Coliseum Monday afternoon.
The Bruins (2-1) defeated the Lady Demons (0-4) in front of a record-breaking crowd of 1,232 fans who came out to see UCLA compete at the university for the first time in program history.
Set scores were 25-23, 25-17 and 25-22.
Senior Iman Ndiaye led all Bruins with 14 kills at a .429 hitting percentage. Ndiaye averages a team-leading 3.31 kills per set through the first three matches of the season. Peyton Dueck looked especially sharp at libero with a team-high 12 digs. Audrey Pak totaled 33 assists at the setter position, 15 of which came in the first set.
Joining Ndiaye in double-figures was Anna Dodson (10 kills, .425%), Cheridyn Leverette (10 kills, .350%) and Grayce Olson (10 kills, .208%). Despite hitting a collective .317 in the match, the Bruins allowed the Lady Demons to keep sets alive, partially due to 10 service errors.
In set one, UCLA burst out to a 17-6 advantage thanks to a 7-0 run at the service line by Ndiaye. During that stretch, Dodson, Ndiaye, Olson and Pak all accounted for kills while Dodson assisted on two blocks. Northwestern State answered with a 5-0 run that burned two of the Bruins' timeouts. Back-to-back kills by Jordan Gamble trimmed UCLA's lead to just one at 24-23. Olson ultimately put the first set away with a kill.
Olson's hot hand continued into the second set, accounting for kills on six of her 12 swings.
Three blocks by Desiree Becker and three consecutive service aces by Cheridyn Leverette pushed UCLA to 9-3 in the set three. The Lady Demons resurrected again late in the set with a 5-1 run to tie the score at 21-21. However, a Northwestern State service error and three attack errors squashed any possibility of the match extending. Ndiaye recorded six of her kills on nine attacks in the third (.556%).
UCLA is back in action at the Long Beach State Tournament in The Walter Pyramid this week with matches versus future Big Ten Conference foe Indiana on Friday, Sept. 1 at 4 p.m. (PT) and Long Beach State on Saturday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. (PT). Both contests will be available for streaming on ESPN+.
