Men's Tennis Overcomes Cowboys in Another Road Thriller
January 30, 2024 | Men's Tennis
STILLWATER, Okla. โ Redshirt freshman Emon van Loben Sels of UCLA men's tennis once more provided the winning point in a thrilling victory away from home Tuesday, as the Bruins defeated Oklahoma State 4-3 at Greenwood Tennis Center.
Two days after providing the heroics in a 4-2 win against Ole Miss in Boston, van Loben Sels accomplished the feat again. Two-win days were had by the Sacramento, Calif. native and his doubles partner, fellow freshman Spencer Johnson. Redshirt senior Govind Nanda also prevailed twice for the Bruins (2-2). The Cowboys (4-2) received singles wins from Alex Garcia, Erik Schiessl and Isaac Becroft, whose result was logged after the clincher.
For the third time in as many contests, the tandem of Johnson and van Loben Sels was triumphant on the second doubles court. With the match on serve through two games, Johnson and van Loben Sels earned a break of Basile and Becroft and that proved to be the difference in their 6-4 win. Then, with the top-court tilt still on serve at four games apiece, Nanda and Alexander Hoogmartens clinched the opening point on Court 3. The Bruins broke Leighton Allen and Erik Schiessl for 2-1 and 4-1 en route to their 6-2 victory.
Just one first set was separated by more than two games, with UCLA nabbing two total. Oklahoma State was able to capitalize first, with Schiessl getting the better of Jorge Plans Gonzalez in a 6-1, 6-4 decision on Court 5.
The Bruins answered on the top court, where Nanda earned a marquee win against the nation's 18th-ranked player, Tyler Zink. The other top-50 Cowboy, No. 48 Alex Garcia, soon after pulled his team level once again with a 7-5, 6-3 showing opposite Giacomo Revelli on Court 2. Each of the remaining matches went to a third set.
Johnson continued the hot start to his first dual-match season, rebounding from a lost first-set tiebreaker to beat Basile 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-2 on Court 4 for his third win in a row. Johnson has piled up a team-high 12 singles victories dating back to the fall and has won eight of his past 10 outings.
Faced with a deciding third set, van Loben Sels seized five of the first six games versus Francisco Pini on Court 6. After a Pini hold, van Loben Sels did the same to clinch the result. The Court 2 match between Becroft and Hoogmartens was also finished, with the former registering a 6-4, 6-7(1), 6-3 win.
UCLA, which completed its road swing with a 2-1 record, returns home to face Loyola Marymount Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. PT.
