The Bruins (3-4) outslugged the Seminoles (5-2) in the first game of the day with three home runs, including two by redshirt senior Maya Brady. Brady's two blasts scored five UCLA runs and were the Bruins' final two RBI base hits of the game. Brady now ranks fifth on UCLA's career home runs list with 56. She is also tied for third in UCLA's record books with seven career multi-homer games.
ย
There were four total lead changes over the first four innings. UCLA's eight-run fourth inning provided a 12-5 run buffer the Bruins rode to victory. Savannah Pola ignited the offense in the fourth with a solo home run over the right field wall to tie up the game, 5-5. One batter later, Megan Grant doubled off the bottom of the center field wall to put two in scoring position. The next batter, Jadelyn Allchin, plated the go-ahead run on a groundout to first base which allowed Jordan Woolery to score from third base.
ย
Two Bruins, Taylor Stephens and Madison Pacini, drew back-to-back bases loaded walks to score another two runs, stretching the lead to 7-5 and bringing Thessa Malau'ulu to the plate. After falling into an 0-2 count, Malau'ulu worked the count full and cashed in another two runs on a single past the reach of the Florida State shortstop.
ย
Brady stepped to the plate next and cleared the bases with a three-run homer to straightaway center field to give UCLA its largest lead of the day at 12-5.
ย
UCLA worked 11 total walks in the game, marking the seventh most in a single game in program history. The 11 walks were the Bruins' most since March 12, 2016 when they walked 13 times versus Utah Valley.
ย
Florida State came roaring back in the fifth, recording two hits and three walks before UCLA could record an out. The Seminoles scored their final two runs of the inning on a fielder's choice and double steal of second base and home, cutting the lead to three at 12-9. Again, in the sixth, Florida State recorded three straight hits before recording an out. The last hit by Jaysoni Beachum scored another run to bring the deficit to two at 12-10. UCLA concluded the inning by turning a 6-4-3 double play, beginning with a backhand by Brady, to strand two runners on base.
ย
Brady provided two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth with her second longball of the day to bring the score to 14-10. Taylor Tinsley, who started the game, loaded the bases with two outs and the tying run at the plate. Tinsley induced a foul out at third base and a groundout to Malau'ulu at third base who tagged the bag for the force out.
ย
UCLA scored its first runs of the game with a four spot in the third inning. Woolery doubled on a ball that took a bad hop at second base to plate Brady and Pola who walked earlier in the inning. Allchin and Taylor Stephens drew back-to-back bases loaded walks to score the next two runs. In total, the Bruins drew four bases loaded walks in the game.
UCLA's 14-10 victory marked its first win when allowing 10-plus runs to an opponent since Feb. 13, 2009 when it defeated Northwestern, 16-10.
ย
Tinsley finished her outing allowing four earned runs and nine hits over 4.1 innings pitched. Jada Cecil earned the win despite pitching two-thirds of an inning.
ย
After throwing 85 pitches in her start against Florida State, Tinsley started game two against Georgia just 30 minutes later. Tinsley pitched 6.1 innings and allowed six runs on five hits while striking out four Bulldogs. In total, Tinsley threw 188 pitches across the two games.
ย
UCLA momentarily took the lead in the bottom of the second inning thanks to back-to-back RBI hits by its No. 7 and 8 hitters in the lineup โ Malau'ulu and Addison Mettler. Malau'ulu recorded her third RBI of the day with a double to center field. Mettler picked up her first career hit and RBI with a single up the middle to score Malau'ulu.
ย
Georgia recaptured the lead for good with four runs in the third.
ย
UCLA faces No. 2 Tennessee (4-2) tomorrow at 1 p.m. (PT) on day two of the Clearwater Invitational. The game will be televised on ESPNU.
