BRUINS HOST GOLDEN BEARS IN BATTLE FOR CALIFORNIAย
No. 9 UCLA will host No. 3 California on Sunday, Feb. 25 at 2pm in a UC battle between the Bruins and Bears. The meet will be televised live on Pac-12 Network. ย  ย  ย ย

PROMOTIONSย
Sunday's meet is California-themed. There will be a California surfboard photo opportunity on the north concourse, and 500 California-themed stickers will be given out, along with the UCLA schedule poster and a schedule magnet. ย  ย  ย ย

UCLA-CAL CONNECTIONSย
The two teams have close ties beyond being part of the UC system. Janelle McDonald was an assistant coach under Coaches Justin and Liz Howell at California from 2019-22 before becoming head coach at UCLA in 2023. Bruin graduate student Margzetta Frazier and Golden Bear sophomore eMjae Frazier will be competing against each other for the second time this season. Cal senior Andi Li will be competing in the arena where not only her older sister Anna Li competed with UCLA from 2007-10, but where her parents competed at the 1984 Olympics. ย  ย

A LOOK AT THE BEARS ย
California is 11-3 on the year and unbeaten in Pac-12 Conference play at 4-0. The Bears have been extremely consistent in 2024, ranking in the Top 3 since Week 2 and averaging 197.575 on the year. They rank No. 4 as a team on vault, bars and beam and No. 8 on floor. Junior Mya Lauzon has ranked in the Top 4 in the all-around all season, including a two-week stint at No. 1. She is currently No. 3 in the all-around and averaging 39.663, with a high of 39.775. She also ranks No. 2 on vault, beam and floor. Also with a season-high of 39.775 is sophomore eMjae Frazier, who ranks 16th nationally in the all-around.ย

IN THE RANKINGSย
UCLA currently stands at No. 9 in the national ranking and is also ranked No. 4 on floor No. 6 on vault, No. 12 on beam, and No. 14 on bars. Individually, Selena Harris ranks No. 6 in the all-around, No. 7 on vault, No. 4 on bars, No. 9 on beam and No. 25 on floor. Chae Campbell ranks No. 6 on vault. Emma Malabuyo ranks No. 18 on beam, Nya Reed is No. 10 on floor, and Emma Andres ranks No. 23 on floor. ย

LAST TIME OUTย
UCLA held a 0.425 lead after the first two rotations against Utah but was unable to hold on in the final two rotations, dropping its first Pac-12 Conference meet of the season to the Utes, 197.300-196.975. The Bruins got off to a great start with a season-high 49.525 on vault in rotation one and increased te lead slightly after rotation two's 49.3 on uneven bars. However, the Bruins' momentum stalled in the third rotation after scoring just 48.875 on beam, with just two routines scoring higher than 9.8. The Bruins had an opportunity to reclaim in the lead in the final rotation on their strongest event, floor exercise, but two out-of-bound penalties hurt the comeback bid, and Utah's Maile O'Keefe sealed the Ute win with a 9.975 on beam on their final routine. UCLA sophomore Selena Harris won the all-around and three events for the second consecutive meet, scoring 39.675 in the all-around and recording her second-straight perfect 10 on vault. She also claimed first place on uneven bars and floor exercise with scores of 9.950. ย  ย ย

HARRIS EYEING HISTORY ย
With her 10.0 on vault and 9.95s on bars and floor vs. Utah on Monday, sophomore Selena Harris became just the third Bruin ever to total three or more 9.95s in a meet in three consecutive competitions. The only other Bruins to do it were Jordan Chiles (2023) and Mohini Bhardwaj (2001). No Bruin has done it four meets in a row, which Harris will attempt to accomplish on Sunday. Harris already has the fifth-most meets with three or more 9.95s, with three. Jeanette Antolin holds the UCLA record with seven, followed by Chiles and Jamie Dantzscher with five and Kyla Ross with four. Also with three are Bhardwaj, Kristen Maloney and Kate Richardson.

Harris has continued to impress in her sophomore season, averaging 39.643 in the all-around, with a season and career-high of 39.775 set Feb. 2. She has hit all 83 of her routines in her short career, scoring 39.475 or higher in all 20 all-around opportunities. In her last three meets, she has averaged 39.733, with nine scores of 9.95 or higher. She leads the team with 19 event victories, 23 Top 3 finishes, 19 scores of 9.9 or higher and 13 scores of 9.95 or higher. Harris has scored season-bests of 10.0 on vault, 9.975 on beam and floor and 9.95 on barsย

KATE THE GREAT ย ย
Katelyn Rosen is proving to be one of the top freshmen in the nation this season, averaging 39.381 in the all-around, with a high of 39.500 set against Arizona. Her all-around average ranks her at No. 29 nationally and fourth among freshmen. Rosen has competed at least two events in every meet and has posted season-highs of 9.95 on floor, 9.925 on bars, 9.9 on vault and 9.85 on beam and season averages of 9.8 or higher on all four events. She has won Pac-12 Freshman/Newcomer of the Week twice this year. ย  ย  ย ย

REED ALL ABOUT IT ย ย
Graduate transfer and six-time All-American Nya Reed has made a seamless transition into the Bruin program, competing on vault and floor in six meets so far this season and ranking No. 10 in the nation on floor. She captured her first Pac-12 Specialist of the Week award on Feb. 6 after her winning performances against Arizona, when she scored 9.95 on vault and 9.975 on floor. She averages 9.913 on floor, second-highest on the team, and 9.833 on vault. ย  ย ย

LEE-DOFF LOVE ย ย
Junior Emily Lee has mastered the leadoff position on beam since 2023 and has become just as solid on vault this year, averaging 9.839 on the event, with three sticks. Not coincidentally, all three of those sticks led to season-high team scores for the Bruins. She scored a career-high 9.9 at the Sprouts Collegiate Quad on Jan. 13 and a 9.875 against Washington on Jan. 27, leading the way to then-season-best marks of 49.4. She stuck her leadoff vault again on Feb. 19 against Utah, scoring 9.85, setting the pace for a 49.525 team total. On beam, Lee has scored 9.9 or higher three times, including a 9.925 against Arizona that led to a team season-best of 49.525. Last season, Lee scored a career-high 9.95 in the beam leadoff spot on Mar. 11 and had eight total scores of 9.9 or higher as the leadoff. ย

CAMPBELL FULLY PERFECT ย ย
One of the best vaulters in the nation is senior Chae Campbell who ranks No. 6 nationally even with the start value of her Yurchenko full vault half a tenth lower than everyone else in the Top 10. Last season, she was the only first-team All-American who competed a 9.95 start-value vault, and she placed fifth overall at the NCAA Championships with a score of 9.9. This year, she is averaging 9.913, with two perfect scores of 9.95 and four stuck vaults out of six. She has seven career perfect 9.95 marks and two event victories on vault this year. Campbell also has two event wins on floor exercise and averages 9.906 this season, with a high of 9.95.

GIMME MOORS ย ย
Junior Brooklyn Moors has been one of the Bruins' most spectacular performers on floor exercise, earning scores of 9.9 or better in five meets, with three scores of 9.95, most recently at Oregon State on Feb. 9. Moors has two event victories on the year, winning floor at Oregon State and against Washington. The 2020 Canadian Olympian has competed on floor in every meet and averages 9.875. ย  ย  ย  ย

CAMPBELL, FRAZIER, REED NOMINATED FOR AAI AWARDย
Chae Campbell, Margzetta Frazier and Nya Reed were announced as nominees for the AAI Award, presented to the nation's top senior gymnast. Campbell is an eight-time All-American and seven-time All-Pac-12 honoree. As a freshman in 2021, she won the Pac-12 floor exercise title and was named the Pac-12 Freshman/Newcomer of the Year. She has scored a pair of perfect 10s on floor exercise and has a total of seven career perfect scores on vault, including two this season. A four-time All-American and the 2021 Pac-12 uneven bars co-champion, Frazier has hit 137 of 138 routines without a fall in her collegiate career, including an incredible streak of 133 consecutive hit routines. She holds career-best marks of 39.550 in the all-around, 9.95 on uneven bars and floor exercise, 9.925 on balance beam and 9.875 on vault. Reed is in her first year as a graduate student at UCLA after competing at Florida from 2019-22. Reed was a six-time All-American as a Gator and earned All-SEC honors in 2022, along with WCGA Scholastic All-American acclaim in 2020. She has competed on vault and floor for the Bruins in six meets this season, holding a Top 10 national ranking on floor. She has scored season-highs of 9.975 on floor and 9.95 on vault and has career-bests of 10.0 on floor, set twice in 2022, and 9.975 on vault. ย

NEW FACESย
UCLA welcomes a graduate transfer and four freshmen onto the squad in 2024. Nya Reed brings four years of experience at the University of Florida, where she was a six-time All-American with career-high scores of 9.975 on vault and 10.0 on floor. The freshman class is a mix of national team members in Sydney Barros and Katelyn Rosen and Level 10 standouts in Paige Anastasi and Alex Irvine. Barros is a three-time U.S. national team member and current Puerto Rican all-around champion. Rosen was a member of the 2020 U.S. National Team and the 2022 U.S. Classic floor champion. Anastasi is a four-time Level 10 nationals competitor and the 2023 Region 6 all-around, vault and bars champion. Irvine won a bronze medal on vault at the 2022 Level 10 nationals.ย

Reed, Rosen and Anastasi have competed in at least six of UCLA's meets this season. Reed is averaging 9.913 on floor exercise and ranks No. 10 nationally. Her season average on vault is 9.833. Rosen averages 9.8 or higher on all four events and has highs of 9.95 on floor, 9.925 on bars, 9.9 on vault, 9.85 on beam and 39.5 in the all-around. Anastasi has a high of 9.825 on vault and debuted a Yurchenko 1.5 on Jan. 27. Irvine made her debut in Denver with an exhibition uneven bars routine that scored 9.7 and has earned a spot in the competitive lineup twice. She competed for the first time on vault at Oregon State and scored 9.85. ย

BACK FOR MOREย
The Bruins returned the services of three 2023 seniors - Emma Andres, Margzetta Frazier and Chloe Lashbrooke - for their extra year of Covid-19 eligibility. Andres competed in three meets as a freshman in 2020 and in every meet in 2021 before an injury derailed her 2022 season. She came back in 2023 to perform a total of three exhibition routines, scoring highs of 9.850 on beam and 9.700 on floor in the regular season finale. She has earned a spot in the beam lineup the last six meets and on floor in the last three. She made her competitive debut on beam at the Collegiate Quad and scored a 9.9, and in her first competitive floor routine of the season against Arizona, she scored a career-high 9.925. Andres is averaging 9.833 on floor and currently ranks No. 23 in the nation. Four-time All-American and 2021 Pac-12 bars champion Margzetta Frazier is back in her sixth year with the program after redshirting in 2022 with a foot fracture. She went 133 routines in her career before her first-ever fall. Frazier's streak lasted from Jan. 4, 2019 to Jan. 21, 2024. Frazier has competed on uneven bars in every meet this year and has scored season-highs of 9.9 in her last two meets. Last year, Frazier finished fourth overall on floor at the NCAA Championships with a career-best 9.9500. After missing all of the 2021 season and most of 2022 with an Achilles injury, Lashbrooke came back in 2023 to compete on floor in three meets and exhibition in two others, posting a high of 9.875 against Iowa State. She holds a career average of 9.839 on the event. ย

OLYMPIC DREAMSย
The Bruins are without the services of Jordan Chiles and Ana Padurariu in 2024 as they pursue their Olympic dreams. Chiles is training for her second Olympic spot after winning team silver at the 2020 Olympics and team gold and vault and floor silver at the 2022 World Championships. She also recently won team gold, vault silver and all-around bronze at the Pan American Games. The nine-time All-American had a banner 2023 season, winning the NCAA and Pac-12 bars and floor titles and scoring five perfect 10s (three on bars, two on floor). She was also named the WCGA West Region Gymnast of the Year and College Gym News Sportswoman of the Year. Padurariu is training in hopes of qualifying for her first Olympic berth with Team Canada. A member of Canada's national team from 2015-20 and a World silver medalist on beam in 2018, Padurariu was on the 2020 Olympic path before an ankle injury changed her course. After a successful 2023 collegiate campaign, during which she scored career-highs of 9.95 on bars and beam, Padurariu returned to the elite scene, demoing at the 2023 Canadian National Championships in May and Elite Canada this February.ย

Emma Malabuyo will also be pursuing an Olympic berth under the Philippines flag but is remaining on the team and competing with the Bruins between qualifying competitions. She finished second on floor exercise at her first World Cup meet in Cairo and earned the maximum 30 points towards qualifying. She competes at Cottbus this weekend, with the qualifying rounds for beam and floor beginning on Feb. 23. Malabuyo made history for the Philippines this past summer at the Asian Championships, recording the highest-ever placement by a Filipina gymnast with her silver medal-winning performance on floor exercise. She scored 13.166 in the event finals, just 0.067 off first place. She also competed in the balance beam final, placing fifth overall with a score of 12.166. The Asian Championships were Malabuyo's first elite competition since the 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials, after which she was selected as an alternate for the Olympic Games. ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย

INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR ย ย
The Bruin roster is filled with gymnasts who have represented their countries in international competition. Emma Malabuyo now represents the Philippines but was a U.S. national team member for five years and an alternate for the U.S. at the 2020 Olympics. Brooklyn Moors competed at the 2020 Olympics for Canada and was an all-around and floor finalist at three World Championships. Frida Esparza competed for Mexico at the 2018 and 2019 World Championships. Sydney Barros qualified for the 2023 World Championships for Puerto Rico and was previously a three-time U.S. National Team member. Other U.S. National Team competitors were Ciena Alipio, Margzetta Frazier, Emily Lee and Katelyn Rosen.ย

LOOKING AHEAD
The Bruins will be on the road for two consecutive weekends to wrap up Pac-12 Conference play. First up will be a Friday night matchup at Stanford on Mar. 2, followed by a dual meet at Arizona State on Saturday, Mar. 9.
